What's new

I am not the chosen...

So, wandering along the Bay the other night I came across it. A 1960s 12.5 oz glass bottle of Pinaud's Lilac Vegatal. I felt like I got a decent price and plus I heard it was much better in the glass bottle.

Well, it arrived today. Very well packed by the seller, I must say! After removing the 15 layers of packing peanuts, tape, some sort of plastic bag, tape, bubble wrap, more tape and some foamy thing over the top, I was able to give it a whiff.

Out of the bottle, I can't say that I disliked it. The wife took a whiff, also little complaint.

Finally this evening I got to give it a try, with my last shave before packing up the den for our move this weekend. Not good...not horrible, but definitely not good. SWMBO agrees that it is "not good". So, now I have this HUGE bottle of a/s that I probably won't use, I don't foresee giving to anyone else. I suppose it will add to the decor of the den. ::le sigh::

Congrats for winning it, but sorry for your disappointment in the scent. My advice is to give it a little time...let it "grow" on you. Some scents take a little time to mature up to your olfactory sense. If after 1-2 weeks you feel the same, sell it or whatever...I am sure someone here will be more than happy to take it off your hands :thumbup1:

The bottle is a classic. If you watch the old Cary Grant movie Topper, you can see it sitting on the banker's bathroom shelf. Keep it and give it a try once in a while. You might find you like it.

I'm on the lookout for vintage Veg and Special Reserve bottles for use/display.

Nice eye spotting the Veg in Topper, Nid.

Also, you have to let it settle down for a little while after you put it on. If the vegetality of LV bothers you, you'll find it moves much closer to lilac after a while. Me? I think it smells great as soon as you splash it on.

You can send it to me for proper disposal. As a gesture of good will, I would even pay shipping.

YES! ONLY FOUR POSTS in a LV thread till we got to cat pee! And it wasn't I who made the comment!!!

Although I am on the "con" side of the LV debate, I do keep a bottle around (in old glass - just 'cause it's cool) and occasionally splash some on.

(and then the cat drags me to her box & tries to bury me.)

....sorry.

You must keep it & try it from time to time - if only for the "Topper" thing. Really.

You've convinced me.
I might give it a try.

But seriously folks - it's been around for ages and they're still making it, so it sells. As long as it does, I'll be happy.

I have not been blessed by the Veg. Unlike some others, it did not smell bad, it just did not smell good. Thankfully, I had only purchased a small 1 oz. decant, so no harm done. I used it 7 days in a row to give it a fair test, and it simply did nothing for me-neither good or bad. Clubman, however, is simply divine.
