Hunting for vintage razors in New York & Fargo

Hi all,

Well in a couple of weeks time my family and I leave sunny, warm Down Under to travel to the US for Christmas with in-laws in Fargo ND via a week or so in New York.

Having looked enviously at the Score threads and others at the stories of NOS Presidents at yard sales, Chrome and Gold Toggles and Red Dot Fatboys at antique stores for $10 each etc etc I'm asking for your help.

Come on, it will only be a once in a lifetime trip so feel generous towards a tourist from Oz - where are the best places to go hunting for vintage razors?

Ok, I understand that you may not want to post in this thread all your secret places so shoot me a PM. If you can psot in this thread that you have done so to bump it up even better

I promise I will not reveal your secrets :biggrin1:

Ouch Fargo?? I left there 11 yrs ago after being stuck for 6 months and haven't looked back. Sorry can't be of much help but there's got to be a lot of antique shops.

If you guys think he needs a coat in NYC you know nothing about ND!!

My condolences sir for that trip - best of luck in the trip, enjoy NYC!

Thanks for the travel advice, coats, thermals etc all ready and waiting. Can't wait for the trip home to land in 40 degree Celsius Aussie summer!

My wife's family are in Fargo so we have heard all about the weather there :w00t:

But surely in the US there are vintage razors just waiting on every corner for me to find - that will make it all worthwhile

If you ask your Fargo relatives about good places to go antiquing, you will have many opportunities to find vintage razors. Antique malls and junk stores should be found in abundance in Fargo. Ask your relatives in advance, and they will likely find you many places to hunt.

This time of year, you may need to use a snowmobile to get around, but that is normal for ND anyway. :001_smile

Bring lots of cash (american dollors, must have for garage sales) Pre-arrange with an shipline and reserve a large cargo container to transport all back to your homeland.
Enjoy your visit:)

Yeah, just do a seach on google maps for antiques in the city you want to look for. That is what I do every time I go to a different city on business trips.

I agree that you'll probably do better looking in Fargo than in NYC, price-wise anyway. Though you'll find more in the way of fancy soaps and such in the City. Enjoy your visit!

Garage sales, antique stores, flea markets and junk shops are where you're going to find razors. Be warned, though, that the market is well picked over on a regular basis and the odds are against you finding anything significant. The further you get from any city or town the better your chances.

I live about 250 miles north of Fargo.....Fargo's weather in January...will be chilly, cold....but it's a dry cold.

I like Fargo, nice city, but I don't know where you would find any DE stuff.

WOW, I'm tempted to scream 'Bingo!' but that may not translate cross-culturally

Many thanks for this and the other advice, I'm approaching the trip with fear and trepidation!

Don't fear.....you'll love Fargo....Montana is Big Sky country.....but the same could be said for North Dakota.

Too bad it's not the summer....there are so many things to see... the Badlands, Bismarck has Fort Abraham Lincoln...where Custer rode off to the Battle of Little Big Horn.....they have a museum there, next to the fort...very interesting Mandan tribe settlement....some venture that the Mandan's might of been Europeans that landed on the North American coast centuries before and made their home, on the banks of the Mighty Missouri River....

I would recommend you contact the North Dakota Tourist Bureau....one of the best around...they can provide you with lot's of things to see and take in...who knows....maybe someone knows where there's a secret stash of DE equipment and supplies...

Hi guys,

Well I survived the blizzards (two!) in Fargo and came home with a couple of presents.

Some Pinaud Bay Rum and Lilac Vegetal and some Cella from Pasteur in New York - AMAZING range and a Superspeed and Black Handle Super Speed from an antique store in Fargo. Was slim pickings around the antique stores. I got REALLY excited in one when I saw a 1934 Aristocrat like this one - http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/One-Piece%20open comb/1934 Aristocrat USA.JPG

Excitement turned to dissappointed when I looked closely to see the badly worn head. Got worse when I tried to open it and the silo doors stuck then almost fell off - it was in pretty bad shape. I almost got it for the case then noticed that it didn't close properly etc etc.

To drown my sorrows I did pick a some Laphroaig and some Balvenie Double Wood

Anyway, thanks again for the advice
