I've been through that Crossing the Equator process, once as a pollywog and many times as a Shellback.
That pic is very mild as to what was experienced when I was in.
I have heard that it is considerably more mild and politically correct now.

I remember seeing a cartoon where one guy was disposing an old blade through a medicine chest slot and another guy on the other side of the wall receiving the same blade through his medicine chest slot saying something like “Ooo, fresh new blade!”

It was pretty funny, but can’t find it now.
