Do you pre -soak ,pre warm the scuttle ?( adding hot tap water to the reservoir and bowl while you shower) then refill the reservoir before shaving .

During the summer I find hot tap water is hot enough for me. I only add some kettle water during winter months.

I fill up my scuttle with hot tap water. I fill both the reservoir and the bowl before I shower to allow my brush to soak. After my shower, I dump out the water and refill the reservoir with hot tap water and it keeps my lather toasty warm.

I have a Moss Scuttle. Fill the bottom and top with hot tap water. Soak the brush in the water while I take shower.

After shower, empty scuttle and refill bottom with hot water again. I think filling it and letting it sit while you shower helps heat the ceramic so that when you refill, it's already quite warm.

Works quite well. Now, lather I get from it is quite warm- not what I would call "hot." Much, much warmer than it would be not using scuttle.

You may be looking for your lather to be quite a bit more towards "hot" than "warm." Max temp of your tap water could be a factor too. My building recently amped up the temp of the hot water and it made quite a difference. Also, proportionate to how long it takes you to complete shave, the scuttle and thus the lather will be cooling.

There are those here who do super heat their water with a kettle. But be careful.

See my wiki in my sig.

The scuttle there is a brush scuttle but the only real difference is you build your lather in the Georgetown

Hope it helps :001_smile

The scuttle is a docking station for your brush, if the walls and bottom are not touching the whole brush then it will not work as designed. If you are making lather in the bowl, is is far too large for your brush.

+1 here. This is the way I do it, and I have warm lather all through my shave. :w00t: :thumbup1:

This is how I do it as well. Except I do use a Kettle, but that is because I don't have a Tap :blushing:

I copied this from another source:

I wish I had some boilerplate for this! What I do is this:

1. Fill scuttle with hot water in both compartments.
2. Soak brush in the hot water in the inner bowl.
3. Do other stuff - for me this means wash face and strop razor, but for you might include reading New York Post, write angry letter to editor, kick cat and so on.
4. Empty scuttle.
5. Refill outer part only with hot water.
6. Shake out brush.
7. Place exactly one British Standard Fingertipfull of cream on brush.
8. Work brush into into inner bowl of scuttle, adding a few drips of hot water as necessary.
9. Make lather on face, dipping brush tip in hot sink water judiciously if necessary (it usually is).
10. Place brush back in scuttle and push down to maximise brush to scuttle contact area.
11. Shave, or something like it.
12. Relather with hot lather. Place brush back in scuttle q.v. step#10
13. Shave again in some other direction.
14. Relather for the bits that need it. Place brush you know where.
15. Shave in another direction, removing tiniest traces of beard.
16. Rinse face, brush, and scuttle in desired order.
17. Kick cat.
18. Go to work, pretend to enjoy it.

Or something like that.

Nothing else needs to be said except,

DIRTY BIRD SCUTTLE, you don't need anything else but hot tap water period !!! And no I'm not affiliated with Julie in any way I just love her product, really works well.
