How to tell if a shave brush was used?

I have been scouring antique stores recently and have seen many Pure Badger brushes that appear from the 1950s-70s. How can I tell if they have been used?

Unless they are stored in an intact original case, they are used.
If you look at them and they are not symmetric, they are used.
If there is soap scum near the base of the hairs, they are used.

If you really like the handle, you can buy them, remove the knot, and restore them with a new knot. See the Brush Making and Restoration section of this forum to see some examples of what other Badger&Blade members have done with antique store finds.
