How to get rid of dark spots on the blade ?

Please help me guys.

These dark spots are common on vintage razors and I've tried to get rid of them at mine.
Recently, I tried with my Dremel with polishing compound No. 421 (the red one). It didn't work

Maybe I should leave the Dremel and just use elbow grease instead ?
Which abrasive agent should I use ?

Another question is, when I find a way of how I can get rid of them, how to avoid damaging the engraving (if any) where the spots are ?

In my limited experience, it looks like you will need to do some sanding on those, especially the one on the heel of the blade. If you would like, before doing that, you might try some black emery compound on a dremel polishing wheel. However, I think a sanding progression (regular wet/dry sand paper) taken to around 1000 grit, followed by a lot of polishing with black emery, red and finally white jeweler's compound is what is needed to remove the spots. I would then hand polish the blade with some maas metal polish. On the other hand, a few spots on an old vintage razor is not the end of the world. I think they can look nice on the right blade.

I think your going to have to go with sandpaper. I would suggest putting nail polish over the etching as that can be removed very easily after sanding. Go up the progression, youse the compounds, polish and good as new!

I highly suggest not screwing with it - sanding is going to leave goofy looking spots that are shiny and scratchy, while the rest of the blade will still have that original patina. Its kind of an "all or nothing" deal - do just a little, and it'll come out looking exactly like what you'd think - like some guy took sandpaper to little spots of the blade, lol.

Oh, it will take ages to get rid of them. I think I better fall in love with the vintage look.

Whoa, I see by your link that you are the guy to talk to if I ever get into DE's! Now that you have all the DE's and Dovos that anyone should ever own, start looking at the old Sheffields - there's a whole new world to explore out there! :thumbup1:

Thanks, you are welcome ! :001_smile
Just got an old Sheffield (EKS). Huge blade 8,5 cm, looks and feels like a shovel :biggrin1:
I'll shave with it on my next 'straight day' :straight:

I have to fix my bicycle in the basement. I'll return soon with a picture of "the monster", I think it's a 7/8.

But before you do, you better post of picture of the thing - in this thread
So, here it is on the right.
On the left is my "learn to hone" razor, which I just can't hone. At least, I learned the technique on it and mine other razors are shave ready, including the "monster":

"Harry" should be a 6/8
