How to determine knot size in handle

I bought a razor stand on the bay the other day and it came with a matching brush. The hair in the brush is pretty bad so I was thinking of replacing it with a new knot from TGN. How do I determine the knot size. Do I just need to rip the hair out (I know it's more complicated than just ripping out) and measure the hole? Is that it or is there a better way?

Yeah rip the old knot out and measure diameter and depth. This is the best way.

At a push you can use calipers to measure the knot size but you won't know how deep the knot hole is and a lot of what you can do will depend on the handle material and what tools you have to work on it.

Hope this helps.

If you have calipers you can measure with the old knot in place. If you only have a ruler, then removing the knot is a more precise way to get the size.

Just chopping the hair off near the handle will likely get a decent enough measure. You will likely have to decide on the loft you want to set in addition to the knot diameter before you order...meaning it is easier to remove the knot fully then see what sort of depth you have available to you in addition to the diameter. Most handles can accomidate a range of depths (therefore a range of lofts)...but some are more restricted so your choice of available knots is going to depend on both measures.

Fidjit's technique is correct, pull out and measure diameter + deep.

how would you go about REMOVING the hair knot?

A pair of pliers, pull them out.

You can drill them out.

You can try to pull on it with your hands. I did 2 brushes like that, the knot just felt.

You could use a corkscrew but you can damage the handle that way, be careful.

Mmm, pretty much all I can think of...
