What's new

How old is the D. R. Harris soap formulation?

D. R. Harris soaps are, of course, fine soaps.

What I'm wondering is the age of this palm oil/tallow blend? I've read its an unchanged soap, but the palm oil first, tallow down the list formula makes me sceptical. Does anybody remember a different Harris formulation?

Cheers :thumbup1:

It used to be a tallow first soap, but was changed a few years ago. All of those great English brands seemed to change, but at least Harris retained some tallow in the formula.

Even the Trumpers soap, which eliminated tallow completely, is still great. How they managed that is beyond me, given the results some other companies have acheived, ahem Penhaligons.

I really can't tell a huge difference in formulations with Trumper's and D.R. Harris. Both have done a remarkable job and still put out an excellent product.

Just goes to show that a great shave doesn't require tallow, and that its a little overated to say the least!

I wouldn't really say that tallow is "overrated". I'm no stranger to non-tallow soaps and many of them are certainly great, but there is something special about a well-made tallow-based soap.

I received a Marlborough refill a couple of days ago and noticed that the tallow is second. I threw out the boxes for the older ones I have so I had nothing to compare it to but I could have sword tallow was a few notches down the list.

I used the lavander soap today (tallow as second ingredient) and I had a SUPERB shave.I really like T&H,Cyril R Salter and Trumper soaps, but Harris are a little bit better (or much better in certain occasions).I wonder how the tallow first ingredient version performed, but I bet that nothing less than amazing.

Floris did a great job with the reformulation in their latest batches too, though initially they had some problems. The new Floris soaps are fine, just like Trumper - I wouldn't be surprised if they were made by the same company. I read that Floris used to make the tallow soaps for Pen, I wonder why they don't make the non-tallow soaps too so Pen could still sell a good performer as opposed to just a name.

I agree. I seem to get better results from the French shea butter soaps (Cade, PdP) than the tallow soaps I tried so far. My skin may just be vegan and I don't even know it!

Hmm, the puck of Arlington I have is also long since boxless, but I too could have swore tallow as about 5th or 6th on the list, similar to the 'semi-reformulated' soaps that the likes of Penhaligan's were briefly selling.
