How often do you clean your razor?

Hey guys!

I only have one razor as of yet, the Parker 22R. It collects gunk like you wouldn't believe. One shave and it's already dirty, covered with white residue.

To be honest, it's a pain. I need to clean my razor if I want to impress someone coming over! It simply looks unhygienic.

Do all razors collect gunk like this? :bored:

Hey, welcome to B&B man, I clean mine after each use, rinse it throughly, then I spray a bit of Simple Green on it, and use a soft brush with some water and soap and gently brush it, and then rinse it once more, and dry it and let it sit a bit to dry open air as well.

Really, every use? I mean, I let it run in the hottest water possible in the sink after each use, but it doesn't deal with the residue. I'm starting to think I need to clean it at least once a week now, since I shave almost every day.

No, you really shouldn't be having this problem. Soap scum and water deposits will build up over time, but shouldn't build up overnight.

I'm not exactly sure. I live in student housing and I don't really know. Is there a layman's way to check that?

I really doubt student housing has any soft water at all. You'll notice that it dries out your skin more, soaps and shampoos don't lather as much.

i clean my razor throughly after each shave and dismantle and whipe at each blade replacement. I love the look of my razor and want to keep it tip top.

Is the white residue from your skin. Is your skin white? What on earth are you putting on that razor? I have a couple of old Gillettes, and have only cleaned them each a couple of times. Most of the time, a hot water rinse does the job. What 'products' do you use?

I use different stuff, but they all make the razor like that. Proraso, T&H, Mühle, C&E. Both soaps and creams.

My skin is white, but it's not skin (that would be bizarre :001_huh:). Looks exactly like soap residue floating around in your sink when you shave, and the stuff that builds up in the sink at the water's edge if you don't clean it.

I haven't really noticed that, and they lather just fine.. Is there a proper way to tell though?

Dip it in alcohol after use and wipe down,it will solve your problem. I use a spray called clippercide after each use which is essentially aerosol rubbing alcohol and it works like a charm shines it right up.

I wipe my razor down with a towel after each use , not disassembling it. When I change the blade I clean it with either scrubbing bubbles or a clorox wipe.

Scrubbing bubbles and a soft tooth brush @ each blade change. My water is so hard that I employ a team of ogres with jackhammers to soften it up, no residue problems though.

Ok so I did some research on my city's water supply, and it seems hardness has been increased lately, but it's still well within the "soft water" category of
2,1 - 4,9 dH° (I think it's about 3-3.5).

Magnesium levels should be around 10 mg Mg/l.

I use Poraso TOBS and some others and I also have build up after many shaves. Normally if I wipe it down with a little elbow grease afterward it cleans up without a problem. Just make sure you take out the blade first!

I clean after each use. I loosen the head (DE87) give it a good shot of Scrubbing Bubbles and let it soak while I'm doing other things. I don't use a cleaning brush, just let 'er soak. After a few minutes, it gets a good rinse in warm water. I then shake as much water out of it as I can and set it on a towel to air dry. The next morning the razor is clean and dry, ready for the next shave. When I change the blade which can be between 3 to 7 shaves, I'll disassemble for a complete cleaning.

I usually give it a warm water rinse and remove the blade after each shave... 2 or 3 times a year I will give it a full make over... !

I don't like to see a lot of gunk on my gold Merkur 34. At least every other shave I either wipe it down, spray it with Scrubbing Bubbles or soak in alcohol for a couple of minutes. After a year, it still looks new.

Some creams leave more residue behind than others in my experience. Proraso is one of those, leaves a white film behind. I keep a soft toothbrush with my shaving gear and usually scrub the razor with it before I put it away. Just get some soap suds on the toothbrush and scrub for 10 seconds then rinse, then put the blade back in and let it dry.

I do a more thorough cleaning every once in a while, no set schedule, just whenever it looks like it needs it.

I got moves like Jagger
I towel dry the handle and buff the top of the head after use to help prevent gunk buildup. A toothbrush gets deployed for the inside of the head whenever I change the blade.
