Any money I have spent since I started DE shaving in ‘10. It actually saved me a lot more money compared to cartridge razors. And since 2017, work doesn’t allow beards for “safety” reasons. It’s nice I can shave as much as needed and it doesn’t hurt my face anymore. And I don’t see it as a chore. Anybody prior service knows about that.

I have only kept track of buying/selling razors since my entry into the gentlemanly art of shaving in 2019. Net = $2490. I currently have 55 razors in my inventory, which averages out to $45 per razor.

Let's not talk about soaps and blades :)

Lockback

Dull yet interesting
Like many here, I have likely spent too much. But…the enjoyment this hobby has broght me - priceless😃
My thoughts exactly.
When I got into it 2 years ago, my thought was, "Well, I'll save money and get better shaves!"
Yes. I have gotten better shaves, the best of my life.
Saved money? Surely, you must be joking! 🤣
But as someone who's had some reasonably expensive hobbies over the years, even my wife said recently, "Well, at least this hobby's not terrible expensive."
And it's been worth every penny. I enjoy getting up every morning, planning what I'll use for that day's shave.

Well it`s a good initial shaving foundation - on one debit card I`ve spent over £900 in 20 days on tackle - since 21st October 2024.

That`s like my knife and scissor hobby - £18-£20K in two years - nevermind - worse things happen at sea - haha!
Time to put the brakes on - just slightly !

I have a pretty healthy stone collection thanks to this place. Can’t even shave with them. I think I have more in stones than everything else combined.
I have a couple of Belgium coticules for my straight, a few carborundums , some decent Japanese Atoma diamond stones and some non de script diamond cheapies for my 500-600 scissors and kitchen knives - Thank goodness I didn`t get a load of JNats or I would have been bankrupt haha!

I`ve got a mini Tormek upstairs I never use because I can do it faster with the diamond plate next to the sink freehand in a jiffy.

I just heard that there is a secret society of wives discussing "How much have your husband invested in DE or SE wet shaving?"

The statistics here will be a good reference for them.
Haha and how much do our good ladies spend on cosmetics, hairdressers, perfumes, nail bars, handbags, shoes, clothes, beauty salons, health spas, botox, hair-removal treatment, diets, sunbeds, plastic surgery etc ? - I`m sure they use their own payment cards at all times - God Bless `Em - haha !

“I should start looking into traditional shaving I’d probably save a few bucks, those Gillette cartridges are getting expensive…” is how it all starts for a lot of us. Looking back, the irony is both hilarious and also a bit sad.

To end up knowing, with certainty, that I could be perfectly happy with a DE89, a stick of Arko, a PAA brush, Supermax blades and a basic Adidas splash, it cost me piles of fancy soaps and aftershaves, high end razors, dozens of bowls and brushes, a warehouse worth of different types of blades, a few straight razors and the complete equipment to sharpen them, and I picked up a nasty fragrance acquisiton habit in the process.

But it all brings joy, I learned a ton and I found this wonderful community, so it was worth every misguided dollar.

There are so many facets to this hobby; so many rabbit holes. Each aspect has its set of own acquisition requirements. For SR for example, one needs a razor (s), Stones, strop(s) oil, etc. Plus backups. each acquisition has its own set if rationales: from irresistible functional bargains to justified indulgent luxury. Plus, its just fun to get stuff in the mail or a discover formally underappreciated and undervalued treasure at a thiftstore, garage sale or auction site. Like a sort self induced Xmas morning discovery. All in all, its harmless and interesting. though it seems very easy to run up quite a bill, totaling in in the thousands.

It's very curious and I suspect unique to late stage empire behavior. Its possible that some future behavioral anthologist might categorize what we do here as a branch of early 21st century crisis hoarding or 'prepping'.

Regarding these parts, I must exercise the right of silence to ensure my safety.

Well, it seems like people spend their money on all sorts of things... do we need it- no. do we like it. yes.

For example, 'cellaring' favorite pipe tobacco blends in quantities that would probably exceed several lifetimes' usage.
...and yup, that's a thing. Please dont ask me how I know about it.
