How much edge damage just happened?

So I was showing my single as-yet-unused straight to a friend today. I've been paranoid about keeping a good edge on it so that it'll remain shave ready until I finally make the plunge. Of course, he then proceeds to place his thumb on the edge and kind of flick it. Sigh. Obviously this didn't do good things to the edge and I'm wondering if this is something stropping would fix or if a re-honing would be necessary to make it truly shave ready.

You're probably alright. Look for the bevel in a bright light, then reflect the light all the way along the edge. If you can make the light shine all the way along the bevel, then it's uniform and you should be ok.

If it is wavy or chipped where he flicked it then you may need to get it fixed.

It might not have done anything. When I showed my friend two of my razors he proceeded to take them, open them, hold them up to the light and start singing "My Friends" from Sweeney Todd. After a few lines he closed them each with one hand by placing the spine on his shirt and pushing the scales into the blade. I thought for sure the edges would be ruined but they were fine.

Thanks, guys, I will give it a look.

I learned not to allow people to touch my straights after my sister-in-law closed mine not so nicely. She didn't do any damage but still it made me very nervous.

It's a good thing your friend didn't remove his thumb.

+1 to looking at the bevel.

I stopped doing that as every single person want to play with the edge with their fingers... It's not dramatic, just not supposed to...

The only time you need to show a straight to your friend is if he is considering buying it from you.

Neanderthal! Why would you want to flick the edge of a straight? No one touches my razors unless they are invited too, even my wife.

My friends have their own straights.

:wink2:

I only have straight friends

If someone asks to see my straights I always tell them before hand "yes, you can see them, but whatever you do, don't play with the edge"
I also learned that the hard way.
