How long should a quality shoe last before needing to be sent to a cobbler?

As the title says, how long should a quality shoe (e.g. Allen Edmonds, Alden, any of the top British brands) last before needing to be sent to a cobbler?

I suspect this has a great deal to do with your stride and how you take care of your shoes. My AE shoes are only a few months old, but I have a pair of J&M Aristocraft wing tips that are 12 years old and on the original heels and sole. I've probably worn these well over 1000 times. But I spend very little time outside and covered them with Totes in their early winter years and now have half a dozen water proof shoes for winter.

Not long ago there were pictures posted of heels that were shot and I seem to remember that they were only months old.

What gas mileage does an automobile get? (Hint: four letters we like to use around here.)

It is definitely YMMV. Whether one wears the heal or toe down at a heavy angle, drags their feet a lot, etc, as compared to the person who is light footed and walks with the perfect gait. It also depends on the sole material, on two different pairs of Allen Edmond's I can see that their Othello rubber sole is wearing down faster than their mini-lug rubber sole. And whether walking on rough concrete vs carpet.
