How long is an acceptable wait time?

If you were to purchase an item from a forum memer, how long would you wait for them to ship the item before getting nervous or upset? I don't mean how long untill you receive the item, but how long before they actually ship it.

Also, what if you have to remind them to ship it? At what point do you remind them, and should you have to remind them at all?

I always seem to be a day or so behind, so I don't sweat it too much if it's a day or two before an item gets shipped. I'm guilty of this myself. But...if it goes beyond 2-3 days, I don't think a polite inquiry is out of line.

Usually the next weekend is a good marker - people can get busy and fall behind during the week. If that happens, though, I usually let the buyer know so they don't get anxious.

Frankly, I think communication is key regardless of the wait time. As a seller myself, I am always in constant communication with the buyer. Not to mention, I will always put tracking on a package, that way, it does my follow up for me. In regards to your post, if it is longer than a week and is local, I would get worried. It's a different story when it's coming from another country.

I think this is a good rule of thumb. I've sold items before on a Thursday, couldn't get to the PO on Friday, and then had to wait til Monday to ship as my local PO doesn't keep Saturday hours. I usually try and figure things on a case by case basis.

I ask because I'm having an issue.

I purchased an item on Oct 25th.

On the 2nd of November i was contacted and told they seller forgot to ship my package. He was apologetic and though I was not happy about it, i could understand a man loosing track with family and life weaving its magic wand.

So on the 11th I msged the seller to get some info. Come to find out, it still was not shipped and the seller ran out and shipped it that night.

At this point, I don't want the item anymore. I could have purchased it brand new and had it to my door for 40 dollars more. This isn't worth my hassle as far as I'm concerned the seller didn't live up to his end of the agreement regardless of the condition of the item.

Am I wrong? Am I overreacting? Would you sit patiently knowing he forgot, then you had to remind him again 18 days after your purchase?

I think people on Badger & Blade tend to be very patient, too patient in my opinion. I would have told him to give me a refund on November 2. In my opinion, if I was selling something on the BST, I would make sure I have some time the next day to go to the post office.

Honestly, if it was a $5-10 soap and he was selling several other things, I would be ok with a delay of a week or so, allowing that he forgot to send it. Backtracking and seeing what it actually was however, no I would not be ok with it. I won't point to the actual thread, but I think that I have found it. Not ok, period. Bad form on the seller's part.

I depends how you see this. I suspect it was a particular seller, not a vendor with a shop. I know it's no excuse if you put an item for sale, it means the seller is ready to collect payment, package the goods and ship them.

I'd say that a week should be enough. However, not being a shop, some can take time to get to the post office. I think that communication is the key. If the seller doesn't have any then, yes, it's an issue. From all of this, now you know where you stand with the seller.

For me 18 days without shipping would be totally unacceptable for an item I had purchased.\

*** EDIT ***

OK I think I've found the item in question. To be honest considering the amount involved if it was me I would be on the warpath and sharpening my tomahawk.:a13:

Then factor in that for an additional 40 +shipping I could have gotten it brand new from a reputable dealer. Sometimes trying to stretch your money just doesn't pay off.

nickel, I looked up your purchased item and I feel you had considerable skin in the game. The fact you were notified 7-8 days after you made payment and were told the shipment had been overlooked was a tough pill, but everyone screws up now and then, and you were charitable. However...

I would have FULLY expected that item to go out the next day, even if the seller had to skip lunch to go to the posting station. That should have been a given. Without fail.

For you to have to INITIATE another contact with the seller 9 days after the first apology and find it had still not been shipped is unquestionably wrong. That is when you should have said FORGET IT. Refund my payment.

I assume you have not received the item yet. Do you have any tracking or insurance proof that it actually was sent?

I know the seller was in the wrong. I kind of feel you could have done more also. Tactful followups, if necessary, still fall in the realm of gentlemanly behavior. When I sell, I do everything in my power to keep the buyer informed and comfortable with the situation. If, however, the buyer was a little unsure how the process was evolving (i.e. when will it ship?), I would take no offense at a polite inquiry. It takes two to tango, and until one side has payment and the other side has acceptable goods, the transaction is still in process. Both parties should have a vested interest until the deal is done.

Let us know if you receive your item, please.

In a case like this I would bring up the original sale post and not the ship date from the seller. Its not fair when they want their money instantly and they ship whenever they want.

I'm not quite sure what I was supposed to do differently. I paid instantly. I patiently waited after being told it would be shipped. I sympathized and patiently waited again when I was told the package was forgotten about. Then I contacted the seller when I believed it should have arrived. I'm not one to purchase something and contact the seller every day until I receive my purchase, frankly I think that is rude. As I'm expected to pay for my item in a timely manner, it is expected to be delivered as stated, in a timely manner. I feel the responsibility is on the seller to keep any communication open as a courtesy to the buyer.

I have received shipping notification and the Canadian post has verified that the package was received last night at 9pm, After I contacted the seller. I notified the seller that I would prefer he cancel the shipment and refund me my money. I do not feel I'm out of line, even if it has finally shipped. I do not believe the seller wants to go through the steps to cancel his shipment with his courier and refund my money. I know I wouldn't want to do it, but I wouldn't put myself in the position to be asked to do it.

I'm awaiting his response and have read the options available to me from paypal. I have 45 days to file any sort of claim.

I would like it to be clear, I am not trying to slander the seller. I am not trying to draw negative attention to him, its just a circumstance of failed transaction. I understand the seller is busy and has, as we all do, had a mishap. However, that does not justify the negligence of not shipping the package the second time and I'm sure he will agree as he appears to be a gentleman. I should not have to bear the burden of his failure to conduct the transaction.

It looks like the Canadian Postal Service is involved, so even if the razor had been sent out in a prompt manner, it still might not have reached its destination. Having said that, after nearly 3 weeks of forgetfulness and empty promises, I would begin to wonder if I had been scammed.

I'm fairly certain I did not get scammed. The tracking provided to me through paypal for canadian post shows the package received and shipping ot me via expedited shipping, 4-8 days.

This does not make what happened ok. At this point, I would prefer he refund me my funds and take his package back. I don't want to sound rude, unforgiving or stubborn. I simply feel slighted and want to wash my hands clean of this ordeal.

I would feel the exact same way. I have felt the same way after less time.

nickel, when I said you probably could have done more, I wasn't inferring at all that you weren't holding up your end of the bargain. I meant that when you were contacted the first time about the package being completely forgotten and unmailed, you had the opportunity (and every right) to politely ask if it was going out the next day and would he please PM you with the tracking/delivery number so you could keep an eye out for it. That way, if he hasn't contacted you with a mailing number, you can contact him after a day or two and again request the tracking number.

You can do things like that without being rude or a pest. Frankly, the seller warranted that kind of follow-up. Now, from reading your latest post, it sounds like you are going to have to take delivery of the item and try to send it back and request the refund. It would have been easier for it to not have gotten this far.

It doesn't seem there was any intent to get over on you--just total disregard for you, your time and money, and frankly, since the venue was our B/S/T, the selling member showed a lack courtesy to all of us by his actions. Hang in there.:001_smile

I think, once you receive the item/refund, you should provide a full account of the transaction in the original BST thread, including all details and dates.

In fact I wish everyone would do this after their transactions.

It's unacceptable to ship that late. The seller should have let you know about possible late shipping. I ship within 48 hours to fellow B&B members. The seller wouldn't have shipped that late if he were selling on eBay.
