How long for a blade to rust to nothing?

I had a thought today that I could fill the glass bottle I'm using as a blade bank (sealable top, one of those weird plastic cork type contraption...IKEA!) with water and maybe the blades would rust to nothing, then I could just dump it out every time it needs to be dumped? I could maybe add salt to expedite things? Is this a stupid idea? Or something worth trying?

Thoughts?
Thanks,
Ethan.

I'd be very surprised if you could rust away a blade to nothing without it taking decades just using salt water. Especially because a lot of blades have some degree of stainless steel to them. Stainless can rust bit it takes considerably longer than something like a high carbon.

Mmm. Didn't think of that. Good point. Well, it's a large bottle, so it'll probably last the rest of my life. I'll scrap this idea. I'll put it in my "Good Idea on Paper, Not Practice" pile. It's a large pile.

just have your great great great great great great grandkids do it instead!

If you're interested theres a post somewhere with instructions to make a sweet blade bank out of an empty chicken broth can.

Some guys really pimped them out too. Very cool.

I keep my used blades in a glass jar ... and there's not a speck of rust on any of them. I dump them in wet after rinsing off with tap water. The worst that happens to them is that sometimes they stick together due to left-over soap scum.

Even if you kept every single blade that you ever used in your entire life, its not going to take up very much room ... think about those medicine cabinets with the blade slot in the back ... the volume allowed for used blades back there was probably considerably less than one cubic foot.

Based on the standard model of proton decay, the half-life of razor blade will decay is approximately 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years.

Yeah, that's where I got my idea for the glass bottle! It was my favourite. I like that I'll be able to see the blades. Plus, glass bottles are pretty cool.

So... you're saying I should double the salt I add? lol  I think I'm just going to stick with the dry bottle!

How about some strong acid in the bottle to dissolve the blades.. Though that does create it's own problems :biggrin

I have a beach house that I spend a lot of time during the summer at. While beautiful, it is a very hostile environment with all of the salt air. This summer in about July, for a reason similar in curiosity to the original poster I placed a Treet Dura Sharp in the bulkhead in our back yard - out of the water but very close to the water. It rusted completely in one week. I am going down this weekend to close up, so I will check it again, but my guess is it will be pretty rusted. Wondering how long it will stay intact.....

Very interesting. I'd be interested to know the results of your experiment!

Run some current through those blades. That will make them oxidize a lot faster, I did a rusting experiment in about 3 hours when I was supposed to use a month on it and still got an A on the project. YAY! academic dishonesty, but just goes to show you it does work.
