How does the Gillette Old shave?

I have one coming and want to know what it compares to in terms of aggressiveness and comfort.

It depends what you want to compare it to. My old type to me feels like my slim set on 6 or so (meaning fairly aggressive). Comfort is more a function of prep and blade. I use a pre-shave oil, and VdH shaving soap with either an Astra SS or red pack IP. I get great results with little or no irritation. The B&B axiom applies... YMMV! :w00t:

When I first tried an Old Type I found it to be more aggressive then a Slim set to 4. It was also more sensitive to incorrect angle and added pressure. I got razor burn the 1st shave.

I now have quite a few razors in my rotation and find it's not aggressive at all. I used an Old Type Bulldog yesterday and a 1949 Aristocrat today. And I re-used the same blade. The shaves were very similar and I can't say that one was more aggressive then the other.

I don't use pre-shave oil and I don't spend much time at all with any pre-shave prep. Just a hot, wet towel for about a minute and then any one of my tallow based soaps. I can't remember the last time I had any irritation or a weeper.

The secret is proper technique.

I think I'd compare my Old Type's shave to a Red Tip SS, only much lighter in weight. Took me a couple of shaves to get used to it, but now it's one of my 9 favorite razors to shave with. Oh, wait! I only have 9 razors.:blink:Ok, so I love them all! Is there really anything wrong with that?
