How does the Edwin Jagger DE 89 compare to vintage Gillettes?

I have a Gillette Red Tip (thank you, Phil), a Gillette SuperSpeed, and a Gillette fat-handled Tech. My only modern DE is the Merkur HD. How would the Edwin Jagger DE 89 compare to those? Some say it is the best modern DE razor, so now I am curious.

I have all the razors you mentioned EXCEPT the Merkur, well I have a Merkur long handle, and I have an Edwin Jagger DE89 with the lined handle.

My experience is that the Edwin Jagger is awesome because it is heavy and well balanced. It's also stunningly beautiful in it's chrome finish.

As far as performance, it's not a red tip. It's more aggressive than a Tech. I would compare it to an adjustable Gillette between 3 and 6. Depends on the blade you choose to be honest.

I did severely underestimate my Edwin Jagger though. After getting several great 3 pass shaves, I put a new blade in it one day. I must have waited too long to change the blade. I went at my face like the blade was the one in it the day before.

I gashed my jawline.. Pretty harsh chunk. Still have a mark two months later.

So any razor, even a beautiful well balanced modern safety razor, can bite if it's not respected and handled with care.

It gives deceptively smooth shaves. Seems tame, until you aren't paying attention.

It's not Red Tip hungry, but it is smooth and fast. The chrome finish makes it so slick and quick that it's a bit easy to get carried away and I got ahead of myself.

I recently got my Merkur long handle from a B&B'r. THX again! In comparison to the Edwin Jagger it is very light for it's size. I stuffed the handle with solder, as suggested in another thread.

The Edwin Jagger is superbly hefty, and well balanced.

It's close to a 40's style superspeed in shave performance. Same sort of solid steady blade angle. Same sort of variability depending on blade choice too.

YMMV
