How do I split the ends of a pure badger brush?

I bought a pure badger brush earlier this year, but I stopped using it completely because the ends made lathering uncomfortable. How do I split them, or how do I make them softer? I bought a cheap puck of Williams and I've been plain lathering the brush. It is shedding but I'm not sure if it's getting softer.

I'm not sure badger hair splits the way boar hair does, but it will get softer over time. Pure badger is more scritchy than other grades...you can try using shampoo and conditioner to help soften it up

So far as I can tell, they won't get softer. If mine has, I certainly can't tell, and it's nothing like a best badger. Once you trim the ends, you get a scratchy brush, and that's it.

My only suggestion would be to try a vinegar or baking soda soak. If badger hair is like human hair, the keratin doesn't like acids or bases - it will unravel the hair. That is why shampoo is pH balanced. If shampoo weren't pH balanced you'd have tons of split ends. What you're asking to do is make the badger hair have split ends. I'd reccomend the vinegar soak because if there is any soap scum, it will take care of that too. I know a lot of people use this to clean their brushes, so if it doesn't work its at least something cheap to try.
