How can a Fat Handle Tech give a closer shave than a Slim set to 9?

I have a Slim that I have only used on a handful of occasions, but never got a great shave from it. Yesterday, I got the Slim out for another try & this time I decided to throw caution to the wind, by cranking it up to 9 & loading in a feather that had been used once before. Previously I had never gone past 6 on the Slim. To my surprise the shave was very good, not a BBS but definitely a DFS. Thankfully, despite my bravado with the Slim's settings, I suffered no irritation after the shave.

Today I decided to shave with an English Fat Handle Tech, which I had never used before, owing to the fact that my son started using it on the day it first arrived in the den. I used the same prep as yesterday, the same Feather blade & the same 3 pass shave with touching up (less than was required with the Slim yesterday). The end result was a closer shave than I achieved with the Slim. In particular, my top lip (which is my main trouble spot, as my beard is very dense there) was a lot smoother.

I don't think I was applying extra pressure with the Tech, as my face shows/feels no sign of burn. I am reasonably confident that the settings on my Slim are OK, as it was unused when I bought it & I do see movement when I go through the settings from 1 to 9. I also feel the difference in the shave between the settings. The only thing I did notice was that the Slim was quite noisy during the shave, as if the blade was moving up & down (I do know about the 1/4 turn to lock the blade). My FaTip is even noisier & still gives me my closest shaves, so I don't know if the blade chatter led to me not getting as close a shave as I should have. Previously, I had used the Slim on lower settings, with one of my favourite Astra SPs loaded & it sliced through my stubble in total silence like my other Gillette TTOs (Rocket HD & Red Tip).

Does anyone have any theories on how my humble Tech defeated my Slim on 9? The next time I try the Slim, I will try it set to 9, with a new Astra inserted & set how I get on.

Maybe the Tech holds the blade more rigidly?

And I'm firmly of the opinion that wide settings normally give no benefit. Air gaps do not shave well. Blade edges in contact with skin do.

A pre-war Gillette fat handle tech (with triangular slots) gives me the best shaves. I have tried various razors that are milder or more aggressive but nothing matches the shave. Personally, I think the weight, the very small/thin head profile, and the razor's balance matches perfectly with my shaving technique.

In your case, the Slim is a great razor but maybe your current technique matches well with the Tech.

Same here...some of my best shaves are with the fat handle tech (triangle slots). Could be your face likes mild shavers rather than aggressive. Whatever the case may be, use what works!

My slim set to 9 gives me very close shaves. Though, yesterdays was a bit too close... Not the razors fault, I use it on 9 often. Something went bad.

I have a ball end tech with the triangle slots. It IS a good shave, I gotta break it out someday. So many razors, so little time ;)
