What's new

Hoping someone has experience with the Ralph Lauren Safari:

Hi all,

I have 2 Safaris, one of which needs to be re-knotted. I don't have a set of calipers so I'm curious if anyone knows the width and if there is a preferred vendor to work with.

Thanks in advance for your guidance,

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...ream-brush-is-in-hand-Knot-prognosis-not-good has some discussion. I believe the OP in that thread ended up sending his brush to Rudy Vey for restoration.

If you want to do the work yourself, you will have to pull the knot out of one of them to get an accurate measurement. Calipers are cheap, but Brush_restoration on the wiki has a tip:

US coins are a great gauge for judging the appropriate size hole for a particular knot

Penny = 18mm
Nickel = 22mm
Dime = 16mm
Quarter = 24mm

Are you using the coins against the handle's cavity or against the base of the removed knot? Does it make a difference?

I'm far from certain, but my guess is that the coin guide would be most helpful after the knot has been removed-- i.e., if a nickel fits in the socket, figure on a 22mm knot, and so on. IMHO, investment in a caliper would be worthwhile if you plan to reknot the brush yourself, and a perfectly usable one can be had for $10 or less.

Good luck however you decide to proceed! :thumbup:

Yep - found a caliper at Home Depot for $8. Any recommendations or supporting vendors that I should consider to purchase a silver tip badger brush?

The two most commonly used are The Golden Nib and Whipped Dog. Either will show up easily with a google search. Whipped Dog is out of Silvertip knot until mid month. Either of these companies has top notch products.

Ebay most usually has knots, but you need to search among all the shaving brush listings to find them. Some of them may have lesser quality than the ones listed above. Some have had good luck with knots purchased from aliexpress (spelling may not be correct), especially with the Ace knots.
