Honour thy Father

Hello all,

I have been wet shaving for just over a year now and am particular to the vintage Gillette DEs. My Father passed away last year after a very short battle with Brain Cancer and I never had a chance to ask him what he used to shave with, which I regret. My Dad used Gillette Cartridges as long as I can remember, I got them last time I was visiting my Mom. There was a sensor excel and an older one I remember seeing him use when I was very young, neither one had a working mechanism. I like the idea of passing razors down and bought a new EJ 89 the day I found out I was having a son.

I decided to modify my Dad’s cartridge razors to make handles for a DE. I bought a 60’s Gillette travel razor off EBay, turned down the knurl for a size for size press and cut the head off my Dad’s older cartridge razor.

It now has a good weight and decent balance. The handle feels good in my hand and it’s the closest I’ll get to using my Dads razor. It was a simple process, mind you I am a Machinist and have a full shop at my disposal.

I’m going to look at the sensor excel next.

Has anyone else modified a cartridge into a DE?

Thanks for sharing your story. I never imagined it would be possible to take a cart razor and make a DE handle out of it. Very cool and I'm sure your dad would be proud.

Yes indeed. Looks like you did a very nice job and that is a fantastic way to honor your dad.

Thank you, I appreciate it. With today’s modern adhesives you can make a handle out of pretty much anything. Thread form is a 10-32 or m5 will work too. Endless possibilities. A coworker of mine saw mine and is going to make a DE handle out of wood from his great grandfathers file handle. What a great idea! I’m mechanically inclined and would be happy to offer advice on such a project

You can also do an tribute razor. I have (discovered after buying) an 1925 Gillette Big Fellow. That's the birthday year from my grandfather who got me in to wershaving.

In what year was your father born?

That’s a very nice razor, box and all!

My Father was born in 1954, I have a ‘54 super speed in ok condition. Nothing special to me except the year it was made. Thanks for sharing the pic of your 1925 big fellow

Awesome, just awesome - what a great way to remember your father!
Especially since it's father's day on Sunday.
Congratulations on the birth of your son!

Thank you. I’m going to have a nice shave Sunday morning with it. It’s also my birthday as well as Father’s Day. Big day for this guy lol.

I love the sentiment in turning the cart handle to take a DE head. My dad (who's still around, but up there in age) has used a Norelco as long as I can remember. I have no interest in a Noreclo (I've used them in the past), but he has always worn Brut 33 aftershave as long as I can remember. I have a bottle and every time I use it, I think of him.
