honing with tape?

i have an old razor that has wear on the spine. often read about using tape to set the bevel. just wondered what kind of tape?? is plain electrical tape what to use? painters tape? just cant seem to get a sharp edge on this one, and have never tried that technique. advice?
thanks!

sharpness of the edge has nothing to do with tape or not to tape the spine.
you can use simple black electric tape. this is how we call in usa. in Europe i think they use different color ones. Red ,blue etc
Doesn't matter what color it is as long as it protect spine and changes angle that tape will work. gl

I have never done it, but masking tape is what was used to protect stainless steel where I worked. The #1 reason its cheap, and it doesnt leave all the sticky gunk electrical tape leaves behind. And the lighter color will tell you right away if your touching the hone.

But I stress... I havent honed my razor yet :)

+1 to that...masking tape works great.

I use electrical tape...I have a few colors to define which progression I am in in case I get interrupted and forget.

Maybe you need more tape to get the bevel to form a sharp V...If the angle is off, then this V will take awhile to form...be patient. Either 1) more tape, or 2) keep honing until more metal is removed achieving same result. This is something I was told by a honemeister.

I think you need electrical tape, not masking tape. Masking tape is basically made out of paper and will get honed away pretty quickly. Electrical tape is made out of plastic and slides over the surface of the hone pretty nicely. Also if you are using the tape to raise the angle of attack for your bevel, then you need a bit of thickness there. The thickness of electrical tape is just about right for this application, but I would think that you'd need several layers of masking tape to get the same effect.

TO protect a fancy spine I use tape, otherwise I stopped using it. The only other time I use it is when I have an old razor I found in the antique shops somewhere and it has a ton of hone where. Tape will adjust the angle so honing will be faster and easier.

I must have misunderstood, I thought he was training to avoid getting the spine on the hone, where masking tape would make it more obvious, didn't think about the angle adjustment! *taking notes before I attempt my first hone*

ok guys--tried the electrical tape and gotta say--it did the trick! dont know if it gave just enough different angle to make a difference or what but it worked! razor is shaving great now. i used spyderco medium and fine with the pyramid method, and then went to the ultra fine to finish. i'm just a yayhoo with not much clue when it comes to honing, but at least this time it worked for me, and i have a useable razor again. thanks!

I like the tape as it protects the spine. It speeds the process the first couple of times you hone, if the razor has not been honed with tape before. I found that in about 3 or so honings that the double bevel is lost . . . and so you are back to one edge . . . leaving the protection of the spine as the only real function.

Just my 2 cents.
