Honing on oil?

Did some searching last night but didn't see anything on it. I've heard of finishing, or maybe just honing in general on oil with Coticules. What's up with this? I have some norton honing oil for an oilstone I have for knives. If it helps at all I would definitely try using it. I don't want to do any damage to the stone though, if that's even possible.

There is another shaving forum where you can get all the answers about coticules and oil. Even more specifically, honing Gold Dollars on coticules with oil. You are sure to get one or more rational, enthusiastic and knowledgeable expert analyses in the first one or two replies to your post. They love a good argument, so stand up for your opinion and challenge dissenting views to present logical reasoning based on actual experience. They respect that sort of scientific curiousity over there. You will learn a lot, I am sure.

Uhh... Slash... you are on that forum.

OP... Oil on coticules is common and IMHO, quite valid, but the stone is not porous, so the oil will not create problems for future honings. I like to take a little extra time after my final finishing on water and do another 20-30 laps on mineral oil.
Most synthetic stones and some natural stones are porous, and using oil on them is generally not advised.

IIRC the labels on coticules stated to be used with either water or oil. As has been said coticules are non porous and will not hurt your stone, a wash in dish washing liquid and the water does not bead on the stone.

Krodor did a nice scientific test but I can't find that thread

I was banned else where after I got into a disagreement with one of the moderators and self proclaimed honemeister and got banned.

There another forum? You guys never cease to amaze me. B&B is my one stop shaving site.

I don't own a colticle but many gents here use oil on theirs and state nothing but good about the results.
The question could be not can you use oil but what oil gives the best results.

So Brooksie, are you, as well, one of the banished? I was banned for life, twice, "over there". I like it over here better, anyway. Maybe we outlaws ought to have our own subforum? Or a user group, maybe call it "Outlaw Honers"?

Yep, also banned twice for preferring naturals over synthetics and speaking about it out loud. I really like that idea of the subforum!

Not that it matters, but someone "over there" recently (like within the last few days) posted about oil on coticule (well, actually Smith's honing solution), and one of the more prominent mods who will go unnamed "liked" the post...maybe the tides are turning after all!!

Not sure a subforum would be a good idea. I would have to get myself banned from "over there" to hang out with you guys.
I have banned myself does that count?
