"Honey....will you mow the yard?"

We all know thats a retorical question. It's more like..."mow the yard now!"

Our yard down here in FL is kinda cruddy. It's not horrible, but its not nice either. After LOTS of research this past month I figured out the main things I was doing wrong. I was mowing with a dull blade, not mowing low enough, and not mowing often enough. I was mowing our grass three or four "notches" higher than recommended (centipede in front, bermuda in back). Even though I'll only be able to mow a few more times this year it already looks better! Too bad I found out just now.

If you are using a rotary mower with those grasses you might want to look into a powered reel mower. Your lawn will look much better.

I've been flirting with the idea....push or powered.....can't decide which one to get though. I do like the idea of a reel mower either way!

Replace it with moss. Irish or Spanish. You'll never have to mow again, it's soft, you can play on it, and in spring it comes out in tiny white flowers ;)

Replace it with Zoysia. You have the perfect climate for it. It will take a couple hundred dollars to get it started, wait a year or two for the lawn to fill in, and then you'll only have to mow it three or four times a year.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think were gonna stick the the grass we have. I did mow it down to about 2.5 inches on the centipede and 2.0 inches for the bermuda. Still not down to their ideal heights, but it is way better than what I've been doing!

I am repeating myself, but to get those grasses to the proper height you will need a reel mower. If you try to mow as low as needed with a rotary you will probably scalp the lawn

great post and threads - never knew there were power reel mowers , learned something - we live in a condo & lawn & snow are covered in the monthly fee & so I haven't had to think about whether power reels were available .

In English, we get too hung up on word order influencing meaning.

Really, "will you mow the lawn today" and "you will mow the lawn today" are the same ... pretending that switching two words around will change the meaning and introduce "free will" into the equation is just silly.

Zoysia is a very nice grass. It's super soft for kids to play on, doesn't allow a lot of weed growth and easy to maintain.

Only down side is that it gets beige/brown earlier than most other grasses in the fall/early winter.

I bought a Honda self-propelled mower. It starts so easy and always on the first pull, that now the wifemate mows herself. As often as she likes!
