Honed in Boston

I am intrigued by straight razors, I bought a DE just to start off before making the leap to a straight razor and wanted to know what you guys thought of this for a starter..

I am also curious about how to get it honed as I am pretty sure this is not shave ready. I am in the boston area if anyone knows of a place. I am about ready to just go to AOS and get the razor from them as it is shave ready when you buy it from them but will over pay...

I would bet money that the amazon one, and the one from AOS are exactly the same, and neither would be shave ready.

There are lists of honemeisters that will do it for most times 20 bucks or less.
Or, look up leightons thread below this one he is offering free honing, 5 a week. I don't personally know the quality of his edges, but others have nothing but good to say about him.

AOS + "shave ready" = red, irritated, horrible shaving experience. Or so I hear. Either case, don't believe them if they tell you its shave ready unless you happen to get the one store with a real honemeister working or partnering with. I'm going off on a rant, I'm going to stop now.

Send it to me, if you want. I am in Boston and can put a pretty good edge on a razor, though by no means a honemeister.

Ive bought a shave ready from Henry, I have nothing but good things to say. Smooooth and sharp!!! I would also trust leighton to do great things.

Let me agree completely and stop because I'm about to go on a rant too.

Hmm, if I do get one, any chance I can take a drive up and I can watch you do it so I can learn something in the process?

I wouldn't buy it from Amazon. You can get the same razor for less at Straight Razor Designs, and it is guaranteed to be shave ready (by Lynn Abrams). They also have free shipping right now and you get your first re-honing free. If Henry would be so kind as to re -hone it for you to show you how, you would be set for a while with just that and a strop.

Well I was looking at that route as well but i have an amazon credit card that I can buy with as I am impatient. If I went the route you suggested I would have to save some coin aside for a while which I might end up doing in the end.

Buy from Lynn & Don. Forget Amazon, buy your DMT hones from them. Or a spyderco UF for touch ups. Maybe they have strops and Crox. Who knows? :D

THREAD HIJACK WARNING!!!

I picked up one of the AOS TI blades and tried it straight out of the box and was satisfied with the edge. It gave a good shave but was a little rough. Five minutes of work on the stones and it was a velvet squeegee.

My opinion of AOS is top quality stuff sold at top dollar. If you are patient you can get the exact same quality for about 2/3 the price.

AFIK straightrazordesigns does take credit card payments as well. I'd still visit Henry, but if buying a honed razor is always preferable.

More importantly you would also need a strop to maintain the edge sharp for every shave. And no, don't buy the cheap selective brand you can find on amazon.

What's the bold part mean ?

Four to five orders with SRD and I have nothing to report but positives. They ship promptly and everything arrives as advertised. Of course you are still welcome to send the razor to me or come for some instruction (with the caveat that I am not a honemeister) once I have moved.

Looking for professional straight edge razor honing in mass and/ or RI

Thanks

B&B member Doc226 is in RI and advertises honing service. I've only heard great things about his edges, and will be contacting him myself soon.
