What's new

Homage to the humble Merkur HD

Hi all,

I just wanted to tell you all of my new found appreciation of my Merkur HD.

It was the first razor I used when I started, and didn't know anything better. My shaves got better over time as my technique improved and I found a blade combo I liked. I started to take it for granted...

I then got "the itch" and started lusting after Gillettes and Slants.

Well, the grass is always greener. After trying a Superspeed and an HD Slant, I have now realised that the humble HD is the perfect razor for me.

It's:

  • Very nicely built
  • Balances nicely
  • Easy to load (no fiddling like with the Slant)
  • Small enough for travel
  • Easy to manoeuvre
  • Not fussy with blades
  • Is not too aggressive, nor too mild
  • Is reasonably priced!

I love my HD!

You can always 'slant' yourself.
I was doing this the last couple of days and it really adds to the shave.

It is a twist on the advanced technique showed on the Mantic videos where he would go down and sidewards at the same time and by this slices the whiskers.
I tried it but then you have to think while shaving while it should all be natural since there are two movements involved and you can easily get cut when you go more sideways then downwards.
I put the razor in the half nine to half 3 position or the half ten to half four position, or with other terms ... slanted.
And then I move straight down/up so the whiskers are sliced as well like it would be on the Mantic video and since there is only one movement, it is more difficult to get punished.

I to have tried others after the HD, almost wrote it off. But when I went back to the HD it felt like old reliable, my skill have improved and the HD just complimented that. I don't think I will ever part with it. For those times when I just want a good shave without using a slant or an adjustable I know the HD will come thru.

You know, I'm going to sell my Slant on here if anyone wants it. My g/f uses the Superspeed now!

I really do believe that the HD is the only razor I will ever use now.

Any newbies reading this: save yourself some money and just get one of these first. It will cure SRAD dead. It really doesn't get much better!

On the plus side - I will now have more cash to spend on other ADs!

have you tried the 38C? That extra weight is really nice.

No, but I have been tempted. I don't think it will really offer me anything the HD doesn't already.

What I love about the HD is it's also small enough for travel!

I also have the HD and love it. I have since bought a Tech just because, but the HD is the go to.

Would you mind posting a picture of what you do here? For some reason I am not getting it and it sounds interesting to be able to use a Slant concept on the HD.

Well, put your razor on your face in the beginning position. Now tilt it a bit to the left or right so that one end of the head will be higher than the other one. Now move the razor down as you normally would.
You hit the whiskers at the same way like Mantic does when moving sideways and down at the same time but with lower risk.

Good for you! It is an excellent feeling to know you are using the right razor. The HD is not my favorite, but I cannot argue it`s merits. Happy shaving!

Thank you for answering my stupid question. I'm not sure how I didn't understand that from the original post. Definitely an off day I should just go to sleep now to save myself from further foolishness.

Nah, it is always harder to imagine something from a written text.
A picture says it all but that is always such a hassle.
