Hold the Caesar Salad

What??? It is the only lettuce I currently eat. It is much better for me than iceberg lettuce. I guess I need to see what the risks are, especially since I am currently eating romaine lettuce.

Highlights from above:
CDC is advising that U.S. consumers not eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until we learn more about the outbreak. This investigation is ongoing and the advice will be updated as more information is available.
  • Consumers who have any type of romaine lettuce in their home should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick.
    • This advice includes all types or uses of romaine lettuce, such as whole heads of romaine, hearts of romaine, and bags and boxes of precut lettuce and salad mixes that contain romaine, including baby romaine, spring mix, and Caesar salad.
  • Take action if you have symptoms of an E. coli infection:
    • Talk to your healthcare provider.
    • Write down what you ate in the week before you started to get sick.
    • Report your illness to the health department.
    • Assist public health investigators by answering questions about your illness.

Symptoms of E.coli:
Symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infection vary for each person, but often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Some people may have a fever, which usually is not very high (less than 101˚F/38.5˚C). Most people get better within 5 to 7 days. Some infections are very mild, but others are severe or even life-threatening.

Most people with a STEC infection start feeling sick 3 to 4 days after eating or drinking something that contains the bacteria. However, illnesses can start anywhere from 1 to 10 days after exposure. Contact your healthcare provider if you have diarrhea that lasts for more than 3 days or is accompanied by high fever, blood in the stool, or so much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down and you pass very little urine

Well, like the poster above, Romaine is all I buy - better for you and it keeps so much better .. and I'm already through the second "heart" of the week. The chart shows us as one of the higher rates, guess I'm the denyer, and will continue unless our stores pull it from the shelves. Or I need to ask about RainX for the Toto ..

I too am literally eating some romaine as I type this. Thanks for the heads up, I will check the risks and see if I want to continue to eat the rest.. I don't know about you guys but the anchovies are the best part of a good Caesar salad..

I’m in direct vicinity of E. coli everyday at work. Meh. I don’t eat romaine lettuce though. Unless it’s in those bag salads the grocery sells. I’ve ate a couple of those over the past week. Ain’t got sick though.

I'll report in if'n I don't croak from eating it .. hell of a world, part of me says thanks for Al Gore for inventing the interweb to warn me .. part of me says I didn't want to know when it is after the fact anyway ..

according to the map, California has had 10 cases. considering California has a population of 39 million, that would be 10 out of 39,000,000

+1 That's how I view it too. Probably more likely to get smushed by a vending machine falling over.

You work for Chipotle?
Not quite. But I’ve likely seen some of their remnants.

That is if 39,000,000 people are buying and eating romaine lettuce right? Because that’s where this particular outbreak is coming from.

People are in contact with E. coli every day and don’t even realize it. That’s not to say you shouldn’t take precautions against infection. But you would be surprised where it is. Ever swim in a river, creek, or the like? A lake? Guarantee E. coli is in there. Public bathrooms....yup. Anywhere and everywhere there are people, or animals, there is E. coli. Not all strains will make you sick. But you are in contact with it everyday.
