What's new

Hoffritz DE Question

Alright guys I am mainly a straight user but lately I have been wanting to change it up a bit. I bought a Fat Boy from BST a while back and it is nice. But I have a love for Hoffrtiz branded things, straight and brushes to be exact. I noticed the other day that they made DEs also. Are they good quality? Which ones are better than others? All I have seen are the 3 piece ones on eBay, did they make one with doors on it or are they all 3 piece? Any help would be appreciated, I'd like to get a nice one to go with my collection off Hoffrtiz straights and brushes. Thanks.

The Hoffritz DE razors were made by Merkur and were most commonly slants. There are open comb models and regular safety bar models. I've seen travel models, two piece models, and three piece models. They even made gold plated models. There was an adjustable branded Hoffritz in gold that is the same as a Merkur Progress.

I have not ever seen a twist to open model with doors.

They are of very good quality if they are not worn out or heavily used. They are of higher quality in my opinion than a Merkur razor you could buy new today. That being said, they are still plated zinc alloy. If the plating is damaged, they can have issues with the finish and deteriorate rapidly. Just like any other item made from that material.

I have seen many different models in many shapes and sizes. If you can find one in very good or better condition then you would be happy with it.

There is an interesting article about Hoffritz here: http://www.nytimes.com/1994/12/17/b...-start-at-hoffritz.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

I also have a small collection of vintage Hoffritz items. Razors, brushes, etc..

Two of these:
