Hoes does a shavette shave compare to a straight in sharpness/smoothness

Hello Gents, I've been shaving with a shavette for some time now, quiet slow weekend shaves. I'm getting good results, DFS at least and BBS on my cheeks. For me this is a step up to a straight. I've bought several. 2 are shave ready. These I'll use to compare to my honing/stropping result. I'm using a few Gold Dollar razors to get my technique down.

So I shaved with the Dovo. Pretty darn nice, but I did notice it was duller than a shavette. There was some tugging. Now I have no idea what's "normal".

What are your experiences?

A straight razor blade isn't going to be as sharp as a shavette/DE blade. Shavettes can give comfortable shaves if the correct touch and blade angles are used, but they can also be rather harsh and unforgiving if something goes awry. A real straight is a good midway between sharpness and smoothness in shave terms. They also have more weight compared to a shavette and can cut down whiskers without irritating the skin as much.

shavette blades are machines sharpened and can be harsh...so..compared to a real straight..thats why these have hones..to "hone" out the harshness....

my feather with feather lite blades, has been awesome. both sharp and smooth.
a hard act to follow with a regular straight, at least at my very novice skill level.

IMO, a shavette is sharper but a real straight is smoother. The shavette seems to be a little more demanding when it comes to angle but that's really about it. I can get great shaves with both.

I like both.

A shavette is sharp but not quite as smooth.

A properly honed straight is jsut as sharp but smoother.

I shave with a shavette once a month. It humbles my honing skills! LOL. The issue wit machine sharpened is that they use coatings like teflon. Thats why the blade gets harsh feeling after a few shaves IMO anyway. And you can hone your own blade as you like it. Plus the money you spend on hones etc is a real stimulus for the economy! But if you are into the hobby, its very satisfying. Especially when you dial one it perfect.

Well said, with a minor correction. Nothing like being responsible for as much of the process and outcome as you can. Enjoy my shavettes and Feather AC DX but nothing like shaving off a blade you honed yourself.
