High Fructose Corn Syrup

when I buy groceries I try to avoid anything that has high fructose corn syrup, especially juice. I haven't noticed a difference in how I felt but the thought of eating or drinking anything with that ingredient makes me not want to buy it

I avoid it. Occasionally, when I'm out I may drink something that contains it but I try to avoid buying anything for home with HFC. It probably won't kill you if you consume it occasionally but there are much healthier sweeteners out there like honey, stevia, agave syrup.

I've essentially eliminated it from my diet (i don't purchase anything with it, and rarely eat out (never fast food)). I'm also vegetarian and workout all the time, so its hard to say what impact (if any) the HFCS elimination is having, but overall I'm healthy and feel good. There are so many variables to consider, that it may be hard to pinpoint what impact HFCS actually has unless someone does a 'super size me'esque test.

I tend not to drink much soda or anything that would have it anyways. If I pick up something at the store I pick something from a smaller producer made with cane juice, I have noticed my teeth have gotten better.

I no longer buy any product containing HFCS, but still sometimes consume it when alternatives are not available - like Heinz brand ketchup or possibly sandwich bread in a restaurant. Haven't noticed any difference in how I feel, but I wasn't really consuming much of it to begin with.

On a side note, I wish restaurants were required to label which of their foods contain HFCS and partially-hydrogenated oils.

Since I eliminated soda with HFCS, I haven't had a headache in a long time. I started buying, and now only buy, Coca-Cola made with real sugar. I get the in the 12oz tall glass bottles, 24 to a case, at my local Sam's Club. Not only have the headaches gone away, I also don't drink as many sodas as I used to. We go through the case in a month, which isn't bad really considering 24 between the 3 of us makes it 8 a piece in a month. I used to drink 4, 5 cans of Coke a day. I try to avoid HFCS in other foods as well but it's in everything and it's hard. As soon as ConAgra came out with their No HFCS Hunt's Ketchup, I switched immediately and can actually taste the difference.

Fructose is almost completely metabolized into fatty acids by your liver. If you're trying to lose weight, you definitely want to eliminate high fructose corn syrup and table sugar (fructose and glucose) from your diet as best as you can.

Perhaps Fructose is metabolized that way but HFCS isn't metabolized at all...your body has no clue what to do with HFCS so it just stores it in fat cells...we're trying to eliminate it completely from what we eat..the result is I'm losing weight...just like the disaster that trans fats were (heart attacks, etc.), foisted on us by the food processing idustry in the US, HFCS is gonna be the next major disaster...

Look to the US government's subsidization of corn and sugar import tariffs for your foisting. Businesses are made up of the same people as every other profession and are making a buck the best way they know how. The gov't-caused cheap HFCS/expensive sugar was the path of least resistance for American busenesses. Some companies do lobby for the corn subsidies, but it's hard to let go of the teat if the milk is still a'flowin'.

The jury is still out on if HFCS is significantly or at all worse for your health than sucrose. I will keep an eye on it until it's clarified. I do prefer sodas with sugar (God bless you Thomas Kemper!).

Has any one eliminated it form their diet? If so, did you notice a difference in how you ate and felt?[/................I quit years ago...they put this crap in everything from pickles to ketchup, you have to look a little harder, but you can find products without it... if you have not seen the dvd KING CORN...do yourself a favor and rent it...

I've eliminated it from my diet for all intents and purposes. I never drank much soda to begin with, but now I'm really careful about even buying products that contain it. I know when eating out, it might be hard to avoid it, but recently, I've been eating out a LOT less and only dining at establishments that probably don't use that much HFCS to being with. I either make my own bread now, or buy from local bakeries who I know use real sugar. I also try my damnedest to buy food where I can pronounce everything on the label. Why does bread need anything more than flour, water, yeast, and maybe a little sugar, egg, butter, well you get my point.

As with anything, its all about moderation. If Americans wouldn't suck down a 12 pack of Dr Pepper, 2 red bulls, a Frappuchino, Krispy Creme and a Big Mac meal (yea thats loaded with HFCS too) maybe we wouldn't be having this problem in the first place.

I really like cooking. I like searching out great ingredients. I like being inventive in the kitchen. What I hate most about HFCS is not the health implications for myself (since I don't consume that much anyway). Its the cheap corn which HFCS is derived from has really helped in dumbing down our food culture. Corn and HFCS are providing America with boatloads of cheap calories that they never really needed in the first place.

...Wow I never knew I felt so strongly about that... /rant!

Off topic - I never drink soda anymore, but I've recently fallen in love with the San Pellegrino Limonata. That stuff is tasty!

I think consumers have largely created their own problem regarding bread. They demanded loaves of bread that last for weeks sitting out on a counter top, and that's simply not possible to do with natural ingredients. The Ezekiel sprouted grain bread I buy has to be kept in the refrigerator after opening or it will mold within a few days, but my roommates' store-brand bread is still going strong after more than a month sitting in the pantry. Something about that just ain't right. And the sad thing is many people get hoodwinked into thinking they're being 'healthy' by buying from a supermarket instead of a McDonalds, but in reality there's very little difference between store-brand "wheat" bread and a McD's bun.

A few years back I eliminated soda from my daily consumption mostly because I got tired of drinking all that sugar. The result was that I lost 10 lbs that year, and another 10 lbs the next year.

Most HFCS is a genetically modified product, 85% according to the FDA. The AMA says that it "appears" unlikely that HFCS contributes to obesity more than sucrose.

So HFCS is pure corn syrup (100% glucose) which has undergone enzymatic processing converting the glucose to fructose and then blended corn syrup until a desired sweetness is reached. In the end it's still just sugar. Pure Cane Sugar is the result of processing as well. Both are processed plant products when you get right down to it. HFCS may be a source of mercury but the jury is still out on that.

For me it's all about calories. Use more than you take in and weight loss is the result. Use less and weight gain is the result. In the end I just try to avoid foods that have added sugar of any type. Same goes for fat. Now if I could only wean myself off of Diet Coke....:biggrin1:
