There is a small town in southern Ontario called Tillsonburg which produces high quality tobacco. In the words of the Canadian Poet Stomping Tom;
Tillsonburg? My back still aches when I hear that word!

Picking tobacco is a tough job often done by rambling men from other countries and adventurous men from the Caribbean looking to support their families

I helped a little but mostly got in the way as a youngster...never really broke a sweat, or my back. Had a lot of fun though. Always wanted to climb the barn beams and hang it. I was told that you want to do it until you've done it

Yep. It is a thing. Apparantly tobacco pickers can experience nicotine poisoning.

Yes, you can get too much nicotine from the fresh leaves, it’s called Green Tobacco Sickness. I’ve even noticed a nic hit from handling the oak sticks used to hang tobacco.

Yeah, you wouldn't want open skin on your hands. It's a pretty potent vasoconstrictor.
