What's new

Hey guys, just picked this one up.

And am wondering just how much work I should do to it. Its in remarkable shape! Scales are tight, intact and straight, blade doesn't have any patina save a small area in the barbers notch.

Any of you knowledgeable types able to narrow down a ball park age on this one?

Looks great. I'd say just hone it and see how good it is. If it is a winner, then I'd vote for new scale (I hate plastic, maybe that was a cool new material in the 30s, but ...).
It looks like you can clean up the tang and the notch without touching the blade etching, so little risk there.

Scales look like horn. Should polish up nice without taking them off. That's a looker. It got this far with o.g scales. Keep em.

That thing is old rubbish. Mail it to me for proper disposal. Where have I heard that before? He he.
Damn, getting beat to my own punch line.

I would celan her up just a bit, hone and use.

Can't really tell the scale material but if they are horn a quick clean up and a buffing and they will look brand new.

Just amazing Bear, great find... I have the exact same model etch and all, but nowhere near that nice. Honestly I think its my favorite razor... Scales should be horn as mine have some worm holes. I couldnt tell you what year other than pre 1890 but I would guess somewhat earlier than that.

Mine was a bit of a "bargain" since it had most of the back honed clear off , so I would recommend tape, the "frame" is some kind of nickle silver or something non magnetic.

I made up a temporary back to get it sharpened and have been shaving with it

So I did a clean up on this one... I wanted to do a restore, without a full "lets make it perfect" so for the scales, they got a sanding, and polish, the blade its self, also got a clean and polish. I left all the grind marks from the original build, as I said, I was hoping to restore it to as close to it may have been when purchased. It turned out really nice, I'm looking forward to giving it a whirl!!

Looks great Bear, I wonder what the significance of the #2 stamped on the tail is. Mine seems to have a different shape to the tail, there is some type of number stamped on it but its not real clear. Is your etch (the lettering) into the blade or is the background etched down leaving the letters.

Great to see on so "pristine"

You did a nice job cleaning it very nice. I feel that sometimes people want their razors to look "souped up" and destroy the value of a nice vintage razor. Glad to see you didn't do that................JR
