What's new

heres my starter safety razor, cream, razor kit what do you think

alright i get razor burn and bumps slight, sensitive skin, but I have been working on my tech shaving with the grain, using lots of lotions, and reading alot about shaving... so i havnt been getting as bad ive heard a safety razor is alot better than the 3 and 5 blades out there.. so i bought a gillette flair tip super speed on the bay, i got the the real shaving cream, williams soap, brush, wilkerson blades. so for my first safety razor setup hows it look??????? what are the best blades to use for sensitive skin?? ive heard astra is good.. I am also getting a gillette tech safety razor as well, to try ive heard they are really mild.. thanks

Welcome my friend. As a newbie,i can only offer what i have learned to this point. What works for me or someone else may not work for you or agree with your skin. I have very sensitive skin and i have to consider all ingredients before i use any product and i still will only use a small amount at first. As for blades i am using gillette blue silver and i am getting a close comfortable shave, not a BBS but close enough for me until my technique gets better.

Technique.Take your time, study your face. Do not be in a rush, enjoy yourself. Your set looks good, try some sample packs of blades and soaps, this gives plenty of product to try while you figure out what you like without breaking the bank or getting a large quantity of something you may not like. I would suggest a alum block or septic pen for the mistakes also some witch hazel,it really soothes my sensitive skin. You will get nothing but positive feedback from the gentlemen that grace this forum.

Welcome aboard B&B. Hope you enjoy the ride. Your "starter" kit looks fine.

Practice and patience will pay off in better and better shaves. Good luck.

Welcome,

You will find all the advice you need and more around here.

Your kit looks great. Good luck with it. If you want to know anything just ask someone. For what it's worth I will tell you that it just takes a little practice. Remember: No pressure. Let the razor do the work.

Looks like a good setup. Nothing excessive. Remember go slow, very light touch and don't ever rush it. Enjoy the shave & good luck.

You have a pretty good set up. I would also suggest getting some alcohol free witch hazel for those shaves that leave your face feeling a little rough. This is how I apply it. After I do my final rinse, I put some on my hands, rub it into my face, let it sit for a minute, then apply my aftershave. I'm just here to help, I think you'll like how your shaves turn out after you get the hang of it.

Looks like a good set up to me. What I suggest is to use what you have without changing ANYTHING, then after a month or two, change to a different blade, a new soap, new brush, or whatever else you feel like upgrading/trying. Just change 1 thing at a time so you know what's working or not working for you. Best of luck and welcome to B&B!

Welcome to the forum. See if those Wilkenson blades work for you. If you find you're getting irritation from the first or second shave of a blade, try another brand. You're on your way to quality shaves. My first set up was with a very mild Weishi, so I think you'll do fine. Let us know how it goes.

thanks guys i am really excited about this, and i hate to shave right now but im looking forward to this.. i remember my dad and grandfather using a safety razor when i was younger.. He is evening looking for his razor so i can have it,, lets hope he finds it and its in good shape.. me i fought a variety pack of blades on ebay. so ill try the wilkenson first.. BTW i already use witch hazel that stuff is awesome.. ive actually got my technique down pretty well, not great but its getting there with those crappy 3 blade razors.. I have done a little bit of studying here lately, since my new job requires me to be cleaned shaved no hair what so ever.. i have been shaving with the grain and only going 1 to 2 swipes very lightly, but if i go 2 i lather that area back up before going over it again.. so my shaves haven't been the greatest due to the newer razors have no weight to them and i am afraid to put a lot of pressure.. and also very short strokes, and rinse razor every time.. so I have a newbie question and i apologize for it but what is BBS?? and what are alum block or septic pen? once again thanks for all the advice, seems like everyone on here is super nice.. thanks

BBS = Baby's Bottom Smooth - the ideal for many. A styptic pencil is used to help small nicks stop bleeding and heal quickly. They usually contain alum, which helps with blood clotting. An alum block is similar, but more useful un rubbing over your face to use as an astringent - close pores and take down razor burn.

Alum in block form is usually solida potassium alum. Styptic pencils contain aluminium sulfate or potassium aluminium sulfate, probably to allow for easier molding and packaging, and may be mixed with titanium oxide and binding agents.
