What's new

Here's a blade procedural question.

What's the general thought on this?

After shaving, remove blade, dry and leave separate to the razor or dry both and replace blade ready for next use?

Any variation of the above.

I simply open my DE just a bit to take the tension off the blade then shake out any excess water and put it up in the cabinet.

I never bother with a DE razor as the blades are stainless steel. With a SE razor I will clean and dry the blades after use as they get clogged up otherwise and will perform very poorly.

Lately, I have been opening the razor slightly, then rinse it in running hot water shake it dry and put it back in the rack.

Sometimes I will dip it in alcohol.

The blades I've been using have a warning on the package:
"DO NOT WIPE BLADE - LEAVE IN RAZOR"
I'm cool with following that advice.

I just rinse and hang.
Don't bother loosening anything.
Its not like that blade will be in there more than 4 - 5 days.

Same here; rinse, pat dry and put away. Don't make this more of a chore than it needs to be!

I first learned to greatly extend the life of my multi-blade disposables by patting the blade(s) dry on a dry towel, and setting it down w/ the edges up. 'Doesn't matter if it's stainless or carbon. That edge is so fine, any introduction of oxidation/corrosion is taking alot away from the quality and longevity of the edge. I do this w/ my DE blades (backup for the str8s), and won't put the str8s away until after they're dried, with a good oil applied.

In the disposable days, friends got 4-7 days from their blades. I got 3 months, shaving 6 days/wk. Granted (cheap bastadge that I am), the last shaves weren't that good, but I shaving then was just a necessary annoyance. I wouldn't shave on weekends at all. When the pull got annoying, I'd change, but that was months from first use. See what kind of blade life you get from drying. If you're inclined, see if the life is extended further by oiling between shaves.

I take the blade out, pat it dry with a towel and store it in the cabinet. I never use the same razor two days in a row so it goes in whatever I choose the next day.

When I used a DE.

Clean razor under running water
Dissassemble razor (3 pieces)
Dry razor
pat dry blade
reassemble razor

Same here. If reusing the blade, it goes back in so I'm ready to go next morning without messing with the razor or load up a new one if getting rid of it.

For my DE's, if it is a TTO, I will open a little and rinse with the hottest water from the tap, and then spray with 90% alcohol to help with the drying, and place in holder. If not a TTO, I just rinse with hottest water, spray with alcohol and place in holder. I never remove the blade until it is time to change it.

I opening the razor remove the blade , then rinse the razor in running hot water shake it dry clean it with my shower towel so it stays nice and shinny and put it back in the rack.

I just rinse with running water and let dry in the stand.

With a TTO, I open the doors about halfway making sure water runs between baseplate and blade. Don't know if it matters but I like the idea of rinsing the blade on both sides.

(BTW, I also insert blades with the glue spots upwards so that they don't stick to the baseplate, though I think this is standard practice?)

Here's what I previously posted about this:

My humble ritual::tongue_sm

I take the blade out, rinse under hot water, and pat it dry.
I dry the razor off as well.
I take the razor and coat the edge with Oster Clipper Oil (mineral oil)
Then, it goes back into the dry razor until next use, sometimes tomorrow or in a few days in rotation.
I rinse the oil off the blade and razor with hot water right before my shave on the next use.

Also, a blade stays with the razor, UNLESS it feels bad in the first razor and I think I made a bad combination choice, in which case I move it to one that is less/more aggressive.

Just my 5 cents (2 cents + tax + frequent flyer excise fee) on my 100th post!
