Henry Fonda - What an actor

Was doing a bit of reading and came across the fact that Henry Fonda passed away on August 12 1982.
Hard to believe it has been 30 years ago to the week that we lost such an amazing actor, who remained virtually unrewarded by the Oscar crowd until less than a year before he died.

He was no Hollywood Military man, he was the real deal. Fonda enlisted in the Navy to fight in World War II, saying, "I don't want to be in a fake war in a studio." Fonda served for three years, initially as a Quartermaster 3rd Class on the destroyer USS Satterlee. He was later commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in Air Combat Intelligence in the Central Pacific and was awarded the Navy Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star.

Some amazing films I believe would not have had the punch they had without this incredibly talented man;

If it were not for Mr. Fonda as the cranky but somehow wonderful Norman Thayer Jr., I would not have even contemplated watching On Golden Pond, let alone enjoyed it as much as I did.

Mr. Roberts
As the earnest, protective and ultimately doomed LTJG Douglas A. 'Doug' Roberts

12 Angry Men
As the epitome of reason Juror No. 8

Fail-safe
As the troubled President of the United States in a position where any choice he makes is the wrong one.

Once Upon a Time In The West
As Frank, the villain you love to hate.

Other films which were certainly successful were made even better by his presence;

The Longest Day
As Teddy Roosevelt Jr, trying to make his own name and not relying upon the name of his Father.

The Battle of the Bulge
As Lt. Col. Kiley, trying to convince everyone that Germany is going to make one last push.

Midway
As the inimitable Chester Nimitz.

Have you seen these films? If you have not, you owe yourself the favor of at least watching those films in the first half of the list I posted.

What films strike a memory for you when you think of Henry Fonda?

What do you think was his best role?

I was honestly just thinking of watching twelve angry men not five minutes before coming across this post. I wanted to find a screenshot from it and post it in response to Celestino with a comment about how nothing important is ever accomplished without vigorous debate. But I didn't want to bump it again and see it get more +1 posts.

"Got Shoes?"
12 Angry Men:

After it was all said and done, Fonda helps Lee J. Cobb put his jacket on. Classic.

On Golden Pond:

Fonda [to Dabney Coleman's son]: "You like that word, don't you? Bull****. It's a good word."

Dabney Coleman: "Are there any bears around here?"

Fonda: "Oh, sure. Black bears, grizzlies. One of 'em came along here and ate an old lesbian just last month."

Great movies. Great actor.

Hard to believe you got that math problem wrong. :biggrin1:

He was a legend.

12 Angry Men , just a fantastic study of human interactions.

Early films

My Darling Clementine- Wyatt Earp never better portrayed

The Oxbow Incident- 'nuff said

Trail of the Lonesome Pine and Drums along the Mohawk - You can see the early greatness coming out !!!!

Thanks, corrected. Now I feel even older, and... what's that word for forgetful?

12 Angry Men was a great character study.

I am particularly fond of Fail-safe. What an amazing, and horrifying film.

Yeah, he was one of the better pre-Method actors. His acting teacher was Marlon Brando's mother.

Once Upon a Time in the West is one of my top five favorite movies. I really like Fail Safe and 12 Angry Men, as well.

I need to watch On Golden Pond...

Henry really made On Golden Pond. His dead pan acerbic delivery is phenomenal. I keep telling my wife that I am modeling my old age after Norman Thayer.

Billy Ray: So, I heard you turned 80 today.
Norman: Is that what you heard?
Billy Ray: Yeah. Man, that's really old.
Norman: You should meet my father.
Billy Ray: Your father's still alive?
Norman: No, but you should meet him.

or

Billy Ray: A canoe! Just like the Indians used.
Norman: Actually, the Indians used a different grade of aluminum.

"The Grapes of Wrath"
Should have won an Oscar for this one..

"Once Upon a Time In The West"
My all time Fonda Favorite..Claudia Cardinale was just gorgeous in this movie. Had to like Charles Bronson here too.

"Midway"
I really liked Fonda here, too - but also, I liked John Wayne "In Harm's Way" (1965) , too.

" On Golden Pond"
I always wondered about how he felt about Jane's misguided exploits in North Viet Nam ?
Seems I read once that they had a kind of rocky relationship and must have mended their fences to do this one ?

The Wrong Man is also a great film.
Fonda plays a NYC musician wrongly accused of armed robbery. Based on a true story about Christopher Emmuanuel Balestrero, it is a bleak and emotionally draining film.
Fonda excels in this view of a man caught in a system that is stacked against him.

One of my favorite actors!

Here's a few....

Slim
The Grapes Of Wrath
The Lady Eve (pretty funny)
The Ox-Bow Incident
My Darling Clementine (my favorite)
Fort Apache (one of his few "bad guy" roles)
The Wrong Man
Advise And Consent

On Our Merry Way isn't a great film, but it gave Fonda a chance to work with his lifelong best friend, Jim Stewart
