Help with size?

I would like to try a badger silver tip brush but I use only soaps. I'm afraid that the brush may be to "floppy" for soaps. Is this true? or is there a certain loft and diameter that is considered good for the use of soaps. (Mostly hard soaps).

Silvertip should be great for soaps. You'll want a short loft (maybe chubby territory) and likely a smaller knot (21mm or smaller would be my personal preference) with good density (e.g. shavemac over EJ, just as an example).

Great advice. That about sums it up.

There's the nail, and he hit it on the head. Short loft (under 50mm), 20-22mm knot, and good density.

I'll go ahead and plug the ubiquitous Rooney 1/1 and 3/1 here. Both are superb soap brushes.

Look for a 21 mm brush with a 50 mm loft. If you want more dense, just get a smaller one.

For soaps, I would think Rooneys are the best silvertips.

In my opinion silvertips are floppy in general. You can go with a shorter loft and it won't be floppy but it will be a smaller brush and won't perform as well. The ultimate solution is to get a Rooney Finest or Simpson Super or Plisson HMW if your pocketbook can support it.

Agreed - the "2-band" grades are thicker and stiffer bristles that develop very soft tips after some break-in. Next best thing is short loft supers - possibly a Simpson Tulip 2 or 3 would be another candidate along with those already suggested.
