help with picking 2 Simpsons Brushes..

Hey,

So I've decided I'm going to buy some Simpsons in super badger. Looking at the Chubby 1 in Super 2 band for sure and either the Emperor (probably the emperor 1) or the Ehsan in Super. Currently, I own a saville row 3722, edwin jagger 21mm best, and Semogue 620. I have been tempted by the chubby 1 for some time and am definitely pulling the trigger on it, unless someone can convince me that a chubby 2 is better than a chubby 1. However, I also want to buy a second simpson and am undecided on what that one should be. Looking at the Emperor 1, 2, and 3, and the Ehsan. Does anyone have any advice on these?

Thanks,

X

I might be shot for this, but I actually like Simpsons Best more than the 2-Band.

All the same, I have been thinking about an Emperor 1 in 2-Band...

Yeah I was just reading up on the differences between the simpson's super 2 band and the 3 band for the chubby 1 brush. Seems the 3 band chubby 1 is softer and not quite as stiff as the 2 band chubby 1? That about right? If so, I read to get the 3 band chubby 1 because its already a short lofted, scritchy brush and getting the 3 band will help make it a tad softer if you will, whereas the 2 band would be more scratchy and a tad stiffer..that sound right?

So far I'm thinking these 2:

CHUBBY 1 in 3 band super badger:

EMPEROR 2 in 2 band super badger:

What do you all think? Am I right in my assessment of the 2 band vs the 3 band? And in assuming that the 3 band chubby 1 is the better choice over the 2 band chubby 1?

Thanks,

X

I must admit to not liking the knot shape of the CH1 2band's I've seen but I do enjoy my CH2 2band and Super. I'd go for the CH1 in Super too.

Hey

I have A CH1 super 3-band and it is THE BEST brush I own although my experience is very limited, I would say you can't go wrong with it and that it is the way to go. In truth though all simpsons brushes are spectacular from the eenie Wee Scot to the gargantuan Polo 14 Two band super badger, I don't think there is a poor one. personally I'd go for a CH1 and a Tulip of some description YMMV.

I've got an Emperor 2 in two band and a Case in Best. I've had the Case for about a year and the Emperor for about a month. The Emperor has really taken some getting used to. It takes a lot more soap than what I expected after having used the Case. I don't really notice much of a difference in terms of softness of the tips. I'm also wondering if the much stiffer backbone on the Emperor is making it more difficult for me to whip up lather in my scuttle. I can still get a good lather with it, but it takes more work than my Case. I'm actually thinking of trying to trade my Emperor 2 two band for and Emperor 1 three band Super.

Here are the Simpsons brushes that I would recommend:

Duke 2 in Best

Chubby 1 in Super

Tulip 2 in Two-band Super

And if you enjoy large brushes,
Chubby 2 in Two-band Super

All epic suggestions Hunter! The Chubby 2 2-band will be my next Simpson or maybe a polo 10-2band or 12... oh dear here we go again!!!

Nothing scritchy about my 2-band chubby 1...I'm in love with that little brush. My emperor is taking a hell of a beating but still hasn't bloomed fully. The ehsan, took a week to get into full bloom and is a wonderful brush....you really can't go wrong with any of your choices!!! Just get whatever you feel you like and try it out for a while...if you don't end up liking it, the simpsons are a quick sell in the forum :)

"Bit of a Sidetrack" IWHC - 2 and 3 band refers to the color striations found on the badger hair knot. 2 band has a darker band at the base and a pale white band at the top of the loft. Many consider this a more desirable knot because the hairs' tips are quite soft yet the base provides a great deal of resilience and backbone. It is a premium grade hair and more expensive because of its rarity. Some cynics argue current 2 bands are may not be legitimate, that the tips are bleached unnaturally and it all a bit of a marketing ruse.

The 3 band does not have the beautiful white crown. Its base is a pale brown, the middle is darker brown, and the top is returns to the paler shade. The premium grade of 3 bands is the Silver Tip. Enjoy. I'm sure one of our colleagues will post comparison pics and clarify the above. Have fun.
