help with nani's

Hi guys,

Yes its another Naniwa thread to get your teeth in to!!

I was thinking of starting a little set of these, could you please let me know how this sounds as you dont hear the combination stone get much mention around here!

So what I like the look of is...

Nawina combination 3000/8000 or 2000/5000

Nawina 10,000 or 12,000

Wouldn't need anything less than the 2000 as I have plenty to set bevels.

So in conclusion could I use a cobo stone then jump straight to the 10 or 12k or would I need something in between? Was hoping the 12k would be the final stone before I hit the strop.

Also what is the difference if any between this and the Norton? I have a Norton 4/8k but use it to sharpen everything so looking for a 'straights' only set up.

Hope you can help me out as I'm just about going mad reading thread after thread after thread...............:mad2:

With the 2000/5000 you would need something like a coti to progress to your finishing stone, however with the 3000/8000 stone you can jump straight to your finisher.

From what i've read a naniwa will be a faster cutter, and will require less looking agter than a norton, as for feedback i don't know but with other nortons i've played with, i preferred the naniwa for feedback.

You can certainly stop after the 12k, personally i don't find it enough but everyone's different.

you will like the naniwas they feel much better than norton. less looking after as said above. 3k 8k then 10k or 12k . If honed to max will be more than enough. I just tryed .5 spray on felt very impressed with the spray from srd.

If it helps I've asked a few people who have both if they've noticed a difference between the 10k edge and the 12k edge. Of those I've asked they all said "no", so save your money and go for the 10k. If you feel it's lacking a little polish, you could always get a C12k for cheap.

so out of the two combi stones the 3000/8000 would be a better option, otherwise I guess its the 2000/5000 then an 8k then to the 10k, have I got that right???

I think the progression could be something like:
3/8k and 12k, then 0.5 diamond spray on felt, and stropping.

i've just been experimenting diamond spray on felt. it has made a good differance and has not left harsh edge after final hone i would recomend it . .5 diamond spray that is. just takes a thew laps not many

thanks gents, helpfull stuff here, looks like the 3000/8000 is winning, now just to decide on the 10 or 12k..................ah decisions decisions!!!
