Help with an edge...

So, here's the problem. In the last inch or so of this edge, there's a really nice sharktooth type pattern (as seen in the image attached). The depth is pretty small, the teeth are extremely hard to see without magnification.

How long would you expect these to take to remove? What I have: An Arkansas stone (I think "fine") and a 12k Chinese water stone.

Any tips on getting it to shave ready?

With the stones you have you need a lot of patience. Get a coarser hone to remove the burr, then move on to a finer hone and finish with 12K before you take it to the leather. Start with approx. 2K, then 5-6K then the Chinese 12K.

You will need a lot of patience with only those two hones. As Kees said, a more coarse hone will speed it up immensely. If you don't want to buy another hone, have someone else hone it out for you. If you'd like, I'll do it for free. If you're interested, send me a PM.

Some guys successfully use fine grit sandpaper taped onto a glass plate. Same grit sizes as mentioned above.

If this is something that happens one time only
you should send it to a Honemeister,
but talk to him about the conidtion first.

If this is something to happen more often to you,
you should consider buying some hones.

I (personally) would recommend a Naniwa 800/5000 combination hone.
800 will get rid of your teeth and reset the bevel within 20 min
5000 will initially polish the blade, and bot hones are nice to use
and your arkansas and C12k will do the rest.

You could go for some high grade lapping film,
I would recommend 3M as they have very high purity in their grits.
Those are available in every grit/micron size needed

Thanks for all the replies!

I picked up a combo coarse/less coarse stone from the HW store (tool grade) with which I was able to get the edge much cleaner, then with the Arkansas it seems to be really close to perfect. Next up is the 12k before I try and shave with it.

I sat and watched a movie while working it. Something I'd seen before so wasn't really focused on the flick.

Since you have natural stones already , get a 600 ANSI grit Arkansas soft stone . Price is $15.95 at http://www.kmesharp.com/Accessories.html .

This is a 2" wide by 6" long stone . The stones actually come from Dan's Whetstones in Arkansas . Dan owns the quarry the Arkansas stones come from . He stands by his products .

This stone cuts a nice clean bevel . Exact opposite of a DMT stone . We can see you have been using the Arkansas and C12K stones . Notice the smooth bevel area that the natural stones provide ? This is precisely the reason to use natural stones .

I would get the Surgical Black Hard Arkansas at $49.95 from KMEsharp.com . This will be finer than your fine Arkansas you already have . Probably finer than the Chinese 12k also . I don't have a C12K so I can't say for sure . All I know is the Surgical Black and Translucent are like a sheet of plate glass . They put a hella smooth edge on steel .
