Help with a hone decision

Gents,

Most of you know that I am a coticule honer. I have really enjoyed learing the stones.......except one that comes to mind. I have used Hard fast Dressante, a LPB, La Verte, A soft slow Dressante, La Grise and a La Veinette.

Of all my rocks I have had (I borrowed the La Verte) I get my best edges off a La Veinette. I really like the Keeness that you can Get from a La Verte as well. I had a La Veinette bout that has gone to a new home. That was the only stone that I was topping my Leg hair right of the slurry, and before any water finishing.

The other culprit is that I have a thick tough beard. I have decided to select one stone A La Veinette or a La verte. I will be ordering from Maurice for this one. I am going to have to liquidate my current rocks to do this.

So which one do you think? I think the keeness of La Verte might be better suited to my beard, but my mind keeps whispering to me "La Veinette"

Can any of you help me with this dilemma?

Thanks!

If you are solely concerned with needing to hone/touch up your own razors, then I'd say Verte for your beard type and the keeness you prefer.

If you are honing several razors a day and need something that works faster, go with Veinette.

Or do what everyone else does and buy all the coticules!

LOL!

I maintain my own, and I also hone for others. Here latley I have been going back and rehoning mine. I get much better edges now than when I first started with the coticule.

You could combine one of each. Run the razor up through the faster veinette and then finish off on the verte. Sure they are expensive, but it's only money... and considering how much you are saving by shaving with a straight razor...its a no-brainer... buy several to keep in each room of the house for easy access.

I typically hone a few razors a day on average for customers, and about once a week I tend to have a small pile of razors to go through, so I like a quick working stone. Depends on how many razors you find yourself honing and how much time you can afford to spend honing razors.

I "saved" so much money in the last 2-3 years shaving with a straight, that I could buy a few lifetimes worth of Feather blades, a few DE-s, soaps and creams, and I would still have some money left :001_tongu

My opinion is, get either of the two, it doesn't really matter. Judging from your post, you will buy both anyway in the future, wether you know it or not :001_smile

My preference would be Veinette, if you hone a lot, or rarely use synths for bevel setting. If you use a 1k stone at start, than it doesn't really matter that much.

I would go with both the La Veintte is a bevel set and the La Verte is good for finishing because it's so slow. I currently hone on a LPB with Dilucot then when it's almost water only I take my slurry on blade razor and take it to my La Verte and finish.

You might be amazed that you can do it all with only one of those stones if you practice only using one of them. In fact, I would challenge you to put away every stone but one and use the one left out exclusively for six months. Maybe you'll later keep them all, but it'd probably only be for sentimental reasons, not a practical need for them.

I had an easier time getting a screaming sharp edge off a very very hard Verte or LL Hybrid than I did with any other stone.
That - does not mean it's not possible to do so on another stone. It only means that my skills never progressed to the point where I could get 'that' edge on say an LPB or a garden-variety Dressante. I do believe that it might be possible to do so on a consistent basis, but I never got 'there' consistently enough to want to continue to try.
My biggest limiting factor is usually me - and not the Coticule.

LaVeinette by a hair, but I get good shaves for my tough beard with either. Really a good specimen of either would do nicely. Most often I reach for the Veinette cause I feels so silky to use.

i have found the harder more glassy surface have been more consistant for me , why i'm not sure but as of latley this is what i have come to harder surface such as hybrid /la verte / and my la vainette which is a std grade with glassy smooth surface , i have tryed 4/5 la vainettes and this one i have has been a walk in the park compared to other la vainettes which seemed softer in fel while honing ..

I own a vintage combo hard coti...I use both sides with oil..no idea what vein type...but it puts GREAT edges on my razors :)
