Help picking 2 shaving brushes

I need helping picking two brushes one for my friend thats going to be a gift and one for me. The one thats going to be a gift I would like to be priced around 30 to 40 dollars, nothing specific on size density etc since this his first brush. I guess just a good brush for a first time brush user.

The second for me I would like to be a simpson or hey im open to other brushes, something in the 60 dollar range maybe more im open to suggestions, that is a good face latherer and has a denser knot and is good with soaps but still could do cream.

My recommendation would be the Berkely, Special, or Case in a best knot. You can get two of them for roughly $100 and start your friend off nicely. I'm not a big fan of the Simpson pure knots. I find them to be rather prickly and would rather use my nicely broken in $12 Omega boar brush then my Simpson in pure.

You could talk to Larry at Whipped dog, he could set you up with a silvertip for around 40 bucks. and his costumer service is great!

I agree with those recommending a Simpson in Best. I have a dozen brushes, and the two Simpson Best knots I have are outstanding. I prefer the Best badgers to their more expensive knots. For me, they combine just the right balance of backbone and tip softness.

Ace has a 24mm Silvertip on ebay for $30.00 including shipping. It may very well be the best bang for the buck. It's a great Silvertip with an ivory colored handle. I have introduced this brush to somewhere around 30 people. All but two have felt they had to have one.

Another one that I would recommend is an LS. It is a long handled faux horn in Finest. It fits into what I call the Goldilocks zone because it does so much right. I think they are going for about $35.00 with shipping. A couple of $s less in ivory or black. It is the best brush I have for a tall mug.

Old thread that still has useful information!

IMO Simpson's pure has too much scritch while their current best grade is excellent! Some prefer the more expensive grades, but for me these do not perform better than best!

That said, good places to sample Simpson's are the 46, colonel or case. But their more expensive brushes are well worth considering.

(I know the thread is six years old)

My gift brush recommendation would be a Plissoft. Cheap, good quality, extremely soft.

For personal use the Berkeley 46 still sounds like a good recommendation in that range.

In the real badger I prefer the Simpson best but as a backup the really cheap perfecto real badger is a good fallback. In the synthetics I am using a Jagger XL and for travel a Kent INF1. As I move between two homes I need a double set up. Equally important is the soap used. I like the TOBS, Cella and Col Conk travel puck.
