ok so i currently have a merkur HD while it does the job i am looking for somthing that can get a closer shave. im not real sure what kind of shave a slant or an open comb will give me. i would rate my beard as tuff but im not real sure of what to compare it to. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Slant would be dandy in your case, as would a Gillette NEW.

Get both a slant and a Gem 1912. Both are excellent shavers and if you can't get a close shave with them, you're doing something very wrong.
