Help - need more arm hair

Hi,

This is a call to all you honemeisters.
How do you manage when your left arm (or right if you are a lefty) has no hair left and you need to check the bevel?
Luckily I'm blonde, the regrowth doesn't show too much when I in short sleeves but I'm starting to have difficulties finding a patch of popable hair!!!!!

I think I'm gradually getting the hang of the RFPT, it's my new Ring Finger Pad Test (probably already an official test), I can detect pretty accurately whether I'll be able to pop my hairs with it. FWIW I sort of strum the edge with the pad of my finger just above the first joint (falange???) and you can actually see the fingerprint flicking over the edge - easier to show than describe. The feeling is great and really easy to note the difference between a poppable edge and an unfinished bevel.

I've given up on the TPT as I sliced my thumb open last weekend - the edge wasn't popping all the way along and suddenly, without warning and only using the slightest pressure (I mean slightest, I was just resting my thumb on the blade) I went OUCH and bled all over the kitchen work surface (my honing place of choice).
Oh and the TNT doesn't seem to give me any meaningful feedback.

Cheers,

Paul

I don't use arm hair that much - I just do a couple of quick and small strokes to make sure the blade is even. I also use a finger pad test - which is so subjective that I doubt it is of use until you get plenty of experience - in which case you will know and understand that the very slight cutting of the epidermis just isn't easy to explain and is probably different for each person.

You can use your head hair, too. I'm a head shaver so I don't hesitate to slap the razor on the side of my head and feel if the blade is getting sharper. No reason why you couldn't with a full head of hair - think hair shaping. ;-}

We have a new Golden Retriever (and two older ones). The new guy has great hair - however, since I've been eyeballing him when he walks by my honing table, he has started to stay outside until I'm done.

First, I am not a honemeister.

I use the arm hair test but don't actually cut the hair, I can feel the edge catching the hair but hold back and don't pop it. After I'm done honing and stropping the hair actually jumps out of the way of the edge when it approaches.

No wonder you can get so many shaves from your straight! Your blade never actually touches the hair, the hair just removes itself from its path when the edge approaches it. Haha :scared:

I just got my first Coti... so the honing road begins sometime soon!!

Also I shave my arm hairs and leg hairs as well to check sharpness after stropping to see where its at

That is true, the hair jumps out of the way. LOL

They say painting your nails pink and wearing ladies underwear helps get the HHT5. You should give it a go!

LoL! It just removes itself roots and all right? I'm sure its a few levels higher than a BBS shave!
Just in fear of the sharpness the edge the hair jumps off the face? I guess its a better way to go then to be in the path of such a keen edge haha

Baker! They say? or you say? Know from personal experience it seems haha :D

Nothing more in tune with honing mojo then a straight razor, coti, pink nail polish and ladies underwear ?? haha

I only use the bottom sides of my arms so it doesn't look like I have the mange. I don't know what I would do if I had to hone more razors than my own.

Shuffle on down the the local Beauty Salon and ask for a bag of female hair cuttings. That should last you quite a while.

As you gain more experience, you won't have to test as much. You will likely test at bevel set, and then at maybe prior to final finishing. Nowadays after the bevel is set I only check for HHT prior to stripping, then again after.

YMMV of course

I keep threatening to get a dog for the same reason. Went for our once a month visit to a family member and he said "that's more hair than I've seen on your arms in a while!" It's all gone again now.
