Help! My 12 year old boy smells like an onion patch!

One of my boys has come down with a case of serious B.O., the regular deodorants at the store can't get him through a school day. Any reccomendations to help keep my boy from being "that smelly kid"? As a side note, this didn't happen overnight, it's been going on for about a year now. We chalked it up to him not using deodorant, poor choice of deodorant on our part, getting too sweaty at recess, but he has two brothers basically the same age and grooming habits, that do not have this problem. I've tried some of the offerings from the "natural/organic" stores to no avail, short of taking him to a doctor (which would mortify him), I thought I would check with you folks for advice.

IF he is showering properly with a good soap and wash cloth before bed,he should be ok for school with a deodorant .If this does not work,an anti-perspirant is next.If he still smells bad, smell his back and chest skin ,is the bad odor coming from only his arm pits ? Or from the entire body ? If his skin is exuding a bad odor, than he needs to see a dermotologist, and before the kids really start to ostrasize him.I had a guy I worked with for years, very clean guy, showered twice a day..He would fume out a huge workplace, really foul odor, and not armpit odor ,but was afraid to go to a doctor !...do your son a favor and help him get this corrected, sit down and have a quiet,in depth talk with him first...

I like Speed Stick 24/7 fresh rush. I think they have a bodywash too.
+1 on the doctor

Had a kid with this problem and the doc told us to try Hibiclens on the armpit area. Worked a treat, but I'd not opt for that without talking to an MD first even though it's OTC.

If you can't clear it up by cleaning up his diet and using a deoderant, he may have some chemical or hormonal issues that need to be cleared up. A doctor visit is definitely in order. It could be something a little more serious than just a social thing.

For deoderant, before you give up, try an alum block. Works a lot better than scented deoderants.

Try changing soap, too.

He should also not eat any onions or garlic. The stuff tends to come out through the pores and breath of some folks.

Tough one, especially for a guy that age.
One thing that always really brought out the "funk" in me was synthetic shirts... Rayon was the worst, but even a polyester/cotton blend was bad if it was a tight weave.

Even today, the only way I will wear polyester shirts is in the form of pique polo/golf shirts.
SWMBO bought me a 60% cotton blend button down and I wore it last week... no funk, but the lack of the shirt "breathing" resulted in some uncomfortable dampness.

Big +1 on Slash's recommendations, both for the Alum (it's all I've used for a year), and on the diet.
Onions, garlic, and peppers and heavy spices will exude through the pores in addition to being on the breath. I tend to go overboard on peppers from time to time and I'm smelling like them for 2 days.
I don't know what your culture/diet is, but Indian and similarly spicy foods are a common offender.

Thanks for the advice everyone. He doesn't eat garlic or onions, and it is definitely his armpits. I'm going to try changing soaps and maybe a few of the suggested items.

Did you try clinical strength deodorant? You apply at night before bed as well as before going out. Sometimes natural products are not the way to go.

Our oldest boy had a similar problem when he turned 14. My God it was horrible. It became noticeable and I mean real, how the hell are we going to mask this, noticeable while we were at Disney during the Florida Summer. We ended up buying him some Right Guard Sport. No other deodorant could touch it. Good luck!

I might also add, there are anti-perspirants, deodorants, and then there are the big guns anti-perspirant deodorants..... the last one is what you should be looking for. You need to really look because it isn't always clear which one it is but it will say somewhere on the package which it is.

Shaving the pits might help too. And 100% cotton tahirts. Don't overload the washing machine. Try a different detergent too.

Mitchum PowerGel is pretty much a barrier for odor, and way more effective than anything else I've ever used. Just don't use the solid or roll on. They don't work.

Also, realize that B.O. is caused by bacteria that hangs out in sweat and hair. Shaving the armpits may help, and maybe try some Nivea Deodorizing Body wash. It works really well.

try a tea tree oil soap, one that is loaded with the essential oils. very effective soap..

I have been using a deodorant stone for about a year now and it works very well for me. I used to use the degree adrenaline series or Gillette clinical but both of those made my armpits super itchy. If you have not tried using a alum block give that a shot if that doesn't work then get some clinical strength deodorant.

What's that Blue...WHAT?!?!? :blink::biggrin1:

I like Dial antibacterial soap. I don't have necessarily Olympic caliber armpit sweat glands, but when my wife decided to try a different not anti-bacterial soap there was some funkiness going on.

Good luck!

+1 On Dial...Ye olde Gold is one good soap. +1 also on the Right Guard Sport Stick and Mitchum....if it get's past those I think the only alternative is explosives. There is no problem in life that can't be solved with the correct application of high explosives...:biggrin1:

"Not the Mitchum!" Bonus points for anyone who knows that movie quote.
