help me pick BEST new brush for SOAPS

I am looking for the BEST brush for shave soaps? rooney 1-1? Shavemac? rooney heritage, Plisson. I dont mind spending for silvertip.

Others???

thank you so much

Before you pop for silvertip, I would recommend a custom Shavemac with finest hair. Whatever knot diameter you like (19 to 21mm?) and a 45mm loft. Just email Bernd, tell him what handle style/color you want and give him the knot specs. You'll get a brush you designed for almost the same price as a Rooney 1/1 Super, and the performance will knock your socks off. I also really enjoy my 1/1 Super, too.

Alternatively, I have a Boreal boar brush I'll sell you for cheap. It obliterates soap (that's all I use), performs great, and has a really nice looking, comfortable wooden handle. Mine has only been used a few times, but it's a little bigger brush than I prefer. Otherwise, I would keep it.

Welcome to Badger & Blade!!!

All of those brushes would be great for soaps. I use a Rooney 3/1, a Shavemac 501, and various vintage and reknotted brushes for soaps. On the other hand, i use them on creams also and they work great. I think a Rooney 3/1, 2/1, 1/1 would make for a great all-around brush.

I never used to face lather...until my 19mm short loft shavemac in D01 hair...this thing is a face lather monster

I can say exactly the same thing. For the money, though, Shavemac's Finest hair grade is pretty tough to beat.

Would you say it is better to get the shavemac finest over the silvertip? I went to the webpage and found that the price for the silvertip is not much more considering it will be the 1 brush i will have for the rest of my life.

Thank you for all of your posts so far!

All I do is face lather, rooneys are far more dense which means they hold more warmth, water and lather and they also have a fan shape VS the bulb shape on the shavemacs. Although I do believe that you can customize a shavemacs hair shape. As I have read before some where on the forum "I love my shavemac but its no rooney" I would have to agree.

As for which one you should get is all preference, I love a large, soft, and firm knot that splays a little while I lather up.

If you can afford it pic up anything from their heritage line I like the stubbys or the horn. If youre on a budget go with the super line. Either 1/1 or a 1/2 in super to be exact. I also have a 1/3 in super, which I may sell soon due to my new brush.

Rooney Alibaba 1, or a 1/2. You can still get the Rooney with the horn handle and special grade of hair from Jim @VB.

I'd suggest an Emillion, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere. The Rooney Stubby 2 is very similar. Great soap brush.

I had both an Emillion and a Stubby 2 . . . ended up selling the Stubby because I liked the Emillion handle a little more. You cannot go wrong with any of the Rooney Heritage line.

Alibaba #1 owns soap lathering.

But you may be quite surprised by how well a $8 VDH boar brush works as well. Pick one up at a local CVS/Walgreens/wherever. Really. I was/am quite surprised by how well a cheap boar works and feels. Much better than the pricklyness that a cheap badger can have.

I have a question about Rooney which will dovetail to the given question. I have a Rooney Heritage size 2 stubby and also the Savile Row 3824. The Rooney is denser but tends to be a lather hog. I like it well enough but it takes a lot of soap to make enough lather to really get the brush to spread a lot of lather like the Savile. I love the Savile it is one of the best brushes that I have, period. It is a bargain at $115.

So to the question. Do brushes tend to be lather hogs if they are dense or is it because I got the stubby and thus there is not enough loft to realease the lather?

Thanks,
Richard

Too answer your question,it is not the short loft, but the size of the knot. My custom Shavemac 19/45mm was making perfect lather from day one.I didn't have too wait a month or longer for a break in period.I also have a Rooney 1/1 for comparison

I think it is the density, but also shorter loft brushes tend to be denser. I have a 45mm loft brush that is not super dense, and it gives up the lather just fine. So that is why I ay it is density, not loft that makes a brusha lather hog.

I have been reading and dreaming of a nice badger since I joined up. As an interium measure I recently bought a Boreal 976 boar....my it is a very nice boar brush. It actually stopped me from buying several badger offerings in BST recently. Everyday I use it I am more impressed with it.

So check out a good quality boar.

That said, I still am lusting after a Rooney 1/1...likely in Pure.

You can save some coin with the Finest and still get a spectacular brush. On the other hand,if you have deeper pockets go for the D01 grade. My recommendation also is the,19/21mm-45mm loft.A Shavemac with these specs have excellent flow through.

I can't speak from too much experience, but Pure can be very prickly. You may want to shell out for Super.

I second a good boar brush, just about any Omega, and that new Semogue brush looks tempting. For badger, Rooneys can be lather hogs, but they are so nice that once you adjust your technique a bit you will be rewarded. I'll also second the Suggestion on Saville row brushes, I don't have a current model, but Charles at QED is a Soldier for price/value. I don't think you can loose.
