Help me out! Making the switch for SR to DE?

Hey guys,
So Im currently using a straight but realize that I do not have enough time in the morning to truly enjoy this experience. So I am thinking about making this my weekend razor, whereas I can take my time and properly enjoy my shave, and switching to a DE for everyday. I have been shaving for a straight for almost a month now, Im not getting BBS but I am getting closer each time. I've heard the Edwin Jagger DE89 is a good place to start? Opinions? And, will the learning curve be as steep for me, or will my knowledge of straight razor shaving help out? Thanks in advance for any advice! I want to place the purchase tonight, as I am looking forward to acquiring another shaving item already!

I can't speak for the jagger but I see a lot of people like it. I have a merkur 34c HD and love the thing, just trying out blades and Astra SP is nice in it.

Do not give up sir; A fortnight is ne'er enough time to learn the art of gentlemanly shaving. If the proverbial hind quarters of a yearling babe is the endeavor then Father Time is all that you need and the countenance of will. Strive for a struggle less than the day prior; Only then will you overcome your struggles. The mastery of skill that is being attempted took seasons for young men to overcome. A mere weeks is nothing compared to years. You have it in you to learn these skills. However, if near to change are your intentions, enjoy your new experience; endeavor on!

Please, photographs. We must evaluate your decisions pictorially. What straight blade do you struggle against and where do your decisions lead you?

I'd say try to stick with the straights as often as you can. after two months, I had it down to 10 minutes, with a 2 pass shave. I did not have a simple, easy, or blood free transition to straights either.

if it's something you still want to do, work at it when you can. it'll come.

Glad to hear my problem is common one with a solution, thanks a lot guys.

Any DE will work (will be shave ready) since the DE blades are always read. There is much less learning curve with DE. Use even less pressure than with a straight. Otherwise it's similar. If you want a vintage DE any Gillette will do. I like the adjustables and especially the Super Adjustable "Black Beauty" with long handle.

I prefer straights but I enjoy using the DE's from time to time as well.

I like any of the Gillette TTO (Twist to open) DEs. I use Astra blades with great success.

+1 to keep with the straights. I stopped using mine and very much regret it. Basically took me back to square one.

In my opinion, SE is much better than DE. Get a Gem, or EverReady or Star, 1912. It is the pinnacle of safety razor shaving

Yes, the EJ DE89 is a good choice. It's fairly mild, beautifully finished, and my current most-used razor. Three Gillette DE's sit beside it.

The "barley" handle is a good choice, has better grip (when wet) than the other EJ handles. None is as grippy as a vintage Gillette.

My suggestion, FWIW:

. . . If you're rushed, don't use a straight razor.

And yes, the learning curve for a straight is measured in months, not days.

I think that after a month of straight shaving a DE89 will be incredibly mild for you. You obviously already have decent technique and are familiar with careful no pressure strokes (unless you are posting from your local emergency room...) I recommend going right to a slant if you want to DE shave on the weekdays. Look into the Merkur 37C or 39C, you won't regret it!

Come to the Dark Side and shave at night. Take your time and go to bed clean and smooth. You should be able to get through the workday with minimal return of stubble. I wouldn't have it any other way.
