What's new

Help a new user ID his new saftey..

From what i have seen, the head looks like (i believe) an ever ready streamline. but from poking around on this site and online the handle looks wrong. i cant take any more pictures at the minute, the ebay auction has literally just finished. but ill take some more when it gets here.

also, vintage straight and a badger brush in the same auction for 9 quid delivered :D

add to this the vintage 1960s old spice soap mug that my mum just gave me that belonged to my stepdads father and i think i am good to go. i learned to shave on my brothers old dunhil DE about 20 years ago and i cant wait to get a decent shave again after being in the barren wastelands of the sensor for the last 10 years..

also, my mother is in the process of trying to track down her fathers DE, which would be awesome if she can find it \o/

but yeah, back on topic. *** have i just bought? *grin*

Welcome to B&B! What you have is a 1912 model razor. They were made from the early 1910's through the early 1950's by several manufacturer's including GEM, Ever-Ready, Star and Treet. What does it have stamped on the inside and on the back?

thanks for the welcome :D

until it gets here, i have no idea. :D like i said the auction finished about 10 minutes ago. ill certainly take more pictures and post them here when it arrives *stamps foot HURRY UP!*

any recommendations for a blade for a user who used to use a DE back in the day but is sorely out of practice?

The 1912 gives a very nice shave. If you live in the US then the Gem single edge blade from Walgreen's works very well.

its a single? from the shape of the head i assumed it was a double. or do the SE ones just fit in there anyway. *puzzled*

I have 2 eveready razors and they are single edged! cant help you with the shave as i have not used them yet but they seem popular on here and these gents know a lot more than me.

Here is a 1940's military version of the 1912 model. It is a GEM Junior. You can see how the cap opens. It is arguably the best shaving SE razor ever made (aside from the much rarer lather catchers) and can rival the best DE razors for shave quality.

interesting. it looked like it was a screw handle rather than a top opening one. i bow to the forums superior knowledge lol

luckily i live in central london, and Geo Trumpers (which is a 10 minute walk from my house) has the murker blades for £4.75 per 10 :D

Merkur makes a single edge? If not, what you need are the single edged blades with the spline on the back (commonly used over here for scrapers or by themselves, to scrape paint off glass, etc.). I don't suppose you have Walgreens over there, but there are other threads here about the Pella blades (available through the internet), etc.

For a couple of recent good threads on your new 1912, check this or that. Reference sources for the blades are in there.

Thanks for the threads T-Rick according to the guy in trumpers murker make a single edge blade to fit it, being a total rookie at this i am just going to take his word for it. ill take the razor to the shop to check they fit when they get them i guess..

Well, I'm a noob too. Just that I currently have no life , so I spend a lot of time here picking up bits of knowledge from those who offer it (much thanks to all of you!).

I wasn't aware Merkur made them, haven't seen them mentioned here. But Trumper's are the pro's (and have some great products!). So they should certainly know.
