What's new

Hello My Name is Scott and I have RAD.my RAD-Annonymous Story

After I became interested in DE shaving, and did my research like a good noob here, I of course got "the bug" or RAD as I have come to learn...

It was fun on vacation looking in every antique shop I crossed and scrounging the Welfleet Flea Market on Cape Cod, coming home with four vintage Gillette DE's...

Alas, in the 5 months I have belonged to you all, I have amassed quite a collection of DE's, both Vintage and Modern...

I PIF'd one tech to a friend, one SS to my Dad, and have one cased New long comb I PIF'd for repair but came back to me (member couldnt find the love, I understand! still thinking of how/if to re-PIF or sell that one)

I am left with those I have come to rely on, and those that stay in the drawer...and having rounded out my collection with the incoming Weber I just picked up on BST, well I am wondering...

Am I a user or a collector...and I think the answer is user...I am all about the shave and not mounting or showing them off...(except to you guys)

I love the moderns I own (and hope love for the Weber): EJ89barley, Merkur Slant 37c and my Muhle R41 and my Vintages: my Dad's replated 66 Slim, my first vintage a 69 Black Super Adj, my 37-40 Tech and two Super Speeds a black handled and a Red Tip...even thats a lot!

left behind is the New I mentioned above, a TV special, a blue tip and two 40's SS (one a black tip), a WWII military bakelite Tech, a mint 60's Travel tech and a 68 knack I got as a birth year razor which I never really "fell for"...will I regret it if I get rid of these...

this is really just a stream of consciousness, I figured you guys would understand, but I had to get it out in the open...kinda like an AA meeting

Hello, my name is Scott, and I have RAD

I try to use all of my razors. It is hard because there are some I like a lot more than others (because they look cool, or other such reasons). This means I sometimes have to wait over a month to use a razor again.

I got past this by creating the Merkur Monday and Single Edge Sunday posts so that at least once a week I would use one of my Merkur razors and one of my single edge razors.

If I didn't do this who knows how long I would go before using some razors

I think I read this in someone's signature here:

I can stop anytime I want to, I just have no way of knowing when if ever that will be.

Well that kind of sums up where I'm at........

Hello Lad, I have 4 tricks for you that worked for me.

1# Stop looking at ebay !
2# Stop looking at the BST !
3# Only stop by an antique shop if it's on your way. That mean don't spend half a tank in hope to find a 5$ razor !
4# Keep what you're using in your rotation and those who are dear to your heart. No one need to have 20 SS, 30 Tech, 15 Slim etc etc

I've stopped buying razors for now ( ok so Ive got 4 more coming but that's the last batch hopefully)
I am on the verge of acquiring another Simpsons brush ( that will cure my SBAD for a while)
I want to get a Klar Kabinett soap and that's it...no more soaps! ( I hope)
But my real weakness is aftershaves ( that's the one thing that I just cant stop)

I need to stop buying ..seriously

Women purchase things all the time, they don't think they have a problem but we KNOW lollll
About the soap and brush, once again I only use the basic, only 2 or 3 cream, 2 brush, 2 or 3 aftershave. Personally I'm not interested in having more than I can use.

I've always looked at our various "acquisition disorders" as a humorous brand for the normal passion that people apply to pleasurable things. Some folk do the same thing with guns, tools, cars, shoes . . . and so forth. Scott's story is more typical than some of us will admit, having felt (or been dealt) some level of guilt for indulging in a little pleasure. Our "hobby" gives passion and pleasure to shaving where before there was no love for the mundane and necessary chore involved in removing fur from one's face. Laugh at it, enjoy it, share it, embrace it . . . but "cure" it? No way!

That being said . . . if one is behind on the mortgage, or their children went to bed last night with an empty stomach because they bought a double-ring on eBay last night . . . that person has a much deeper problem than our "brotherhood" of acquisition disorders!

I'll go take my medicine now . . .

I have this method which is quite unorthodox. My idea is that if I want something long enough, i will end up buying it. For instance, I will look around on ebay, shave sites etc... when i see something I like i will add it to my amazon universal wish list. Days will go by and i will look over my wishlist again to see what i have accumulated. At this point, I have 3 choices, Drop it, Buy it, or Keep it. 95% of the time i will drop the item from the list because from the time i added it to the wish list I would have found something better, cheaper, or both. At times i also have this test that i apply to the items on the list, 1st question is, Do I like it? 2. Do I need it? 3. Does it do it better than what i got? Most the time i stop at 3. Other times i ignore all the questions and just go on a rampage of soaps creams and aftershaves because somehow they are more justifiable than 60 dollar razors.

Hello, my name is Dhilip and I have RAD real BAD!

Thankfully no other ADs so far but unfortunately my RAD tends to focus on British Gillettes that are not cheaply obtained, old types and other unknown razors from Europe! In my collection so far are six British TTO Aristocrats (one more on the way), a British Popular #47, few American OC Aristocrats, many Gillette New razors, Big Boy Hybrid, Bostonian, few cased American & British single rings, few American TTOs and few French / German razors. Not to mention three modern razors from Merkur & Edwin Jagger. And my RAD shows no signs of abating!
