Well, looks like a slant is probably in my future. This morning I shaved with my Merkur Long Handle Classic loaded with a Feather (my go-to combination). But tried, out of curiosity, rotating the razor slightly while maintaining the same stroke direction thereby creating a scything effect with the blade. Man oh man, that was a wicked close shave, with actually less irritation that normal- no aftershave burn. None. Nada. Damn near BBS with only a 3-pass WTG, 2XTG.
My main curiosity was that while my beard is not particularly dense, my facial hair itself is quite think and wiry, and it tends to grow along the skin, especially on my lower neck. Even with top-end prep it's tough to get a shave with zero tug and very close, which is exactly what I got this morning.
So, I'll keep up the experiment for a week or two, then have to decide between the 37C and 39C. Mostly because it's an excuse to buy another razor , but it's also tricky to keep the razor head angled from the stroke direction (which might actually get easier with practice).
I also heard that open combs are good for those of us with facial hair that grows right along the skin...
