Head Shaving

While at my son's for dinner today, I discussed shaving a bit with him. He uses an Atra and a bar of plain soap. I suggested that shaving soap and a brush would probably be nicer. He said what he did suited him. Then, thinking tonight about a possible Christmas gift, I remember that he probably shaves his face at the same time he shaves his whole head; he is a head shaver. Now, do those of you who shave your heads use brushes and shaving soap? Or something different? I did look up a little on the internet, and found no mention of brushes and soaps, but mention of oils and gels. Please enlighten me. Thanks

Well, if he is happy......

For me I use canned gel with no prep and use a DE razor. Lately the Progress on 12 with Supermax Platinum's is working well. The high aggression is good because I will only shave my head sometimes one time a week so the larger the blade gap the less clogging.

I use brush and cream for the head. I shave my head with a Merkur slant or a 1904 open comb. I put Trumper's skin food on before I lather up. I have been using Personna Reds, but may graduate to Feather's.

Hope that helps.

I use a shaving brush and soap or cream with both my face and head. However, I use a Headblade razor for noggin' vs. a DE for the face.

In the past I've used regular soap and a Mach 3 and gotten perfectly fine shaves. These days I use a DE for my face and a Col. Conk Atra with Personna AutoPlus blades for my head. Works really well!

I use a brush and cream / soap as well, but use a DE razor to shave my head as well. Until last week I was using the Indian Gillette 7 O'clock blades, but switched to Feathers last week and have been enjoying a much closer and better head shave.

I've tried DE shaving my head a number of times, but I've pretty much given up. Every time, I've ended up with a horribly irritated, sometimes bloody scalp that took me upwards of a half hour to shave.

Nowadays, I just use a can of barbasol and a Mach 3 to shave my head while I'm in the shower. It literally takes me about 3 minutes to get a smooth, irritation-free head-shave that way. After I'm done in the shower, I get out and shave my face The Right Way (TM) with a superspeed and soap/brush.

Basically, I've found that the soap+DE+brush treatment isn't necessary for my head since the hair is so much less course than my face.

Just my experience anyway. YMMV of course. :)

Brush+Soap+Gillette Open Comb (1914 Single Ring). Fairly aggressive open comb works best on my head and no cuts or irritation...usually (won't use a feather again).

Hair and skin on the noggin is different to that on the face.

Any brightly coloured gel and muti-blade razor will do just as good a job as fancy soap, brush and 50 year old razor and I'll take the Pepsi challenge on that any day.

I have been shaving mine for 20+ years - before it became all 'trendy' - and for a few years I was the only person I knew with a bald head.

(I've just read what weshofmann posted - totally agree)

I don't do the full head shave - just the stragglers in the MPB (male pattern baldness) area using shampoo from the sides and either an Atra or Sensor handled cartridge. No dryness, no cuts, no irritation.

I've really enjoyed using Cremo Cream for head shaving, seems to do the job better than anything else I've tried, and it is extremely slick.

I try not to over complicate my routine (I prefer simple routines). The hair on my head is the complete opposite of my beard:
  • I have less hair.
  • Hair shaft is thinner.
  • Head skin is tighter.
  • Hair does not grow flat like my beard.
  • The goal isn't the closest shave (less hair, thinner hair, softer, smoother, less shine, less irritation, grows slower).
  • I don't need to shave everyday, nor do I need to shave in the morning.
  • Head stubble is sexy.
  • My head is 10x easier to shave than my face. I can almost do it blindfolded.

Routine:
  • Glycerin soap, sudded in my hands like hand soap, then applied to head. I do this several times until my head feels slick.
  • Shave with Schick Quattro. Why? The more blades allow the cartridge to lay more flat on the skin. The blades also have a protection wire. The Gillette is too close of a shave, and I don't like that for my head.
  • Shave against the grain. Shave from front to back. Typically I don't have to use a rear view mirror.
  • Shower to cleanup.
  • Apply non-oily moisturizer (or sunscreen!). I despise after-shaves.
  • No need to shave my head everyday, nor is a close shave the goal. But I shave before my hair gets too long and clogs the shaver, or requires multiple passes.

Hi,
I also worry about a bloody scalp, since I sometimes grow skin bumps without seeing them. I use a light razor, a Lord tech ($7) with a Dorco 300, which is very forgiving. I shave front to back, using a brush and the soap of the day, and feel with my hand for touch-up. I do not go against the grain, not anymore, not in the small of the back of the head, see? I also do not shave every day, maybe every two or three day, I like the feel of the growing hair, contrarily to my beard.

I find using Mach3 for the head very fast and efficient. Have been shaving my head for about 4 years.

For Head shaves

Pre-Shave - Shampoo and rinse with hot water for about 5 minutes
Use badger brush and soap for lather
Shave ATG
Start in the center going front to back.
On the sides - Go down to up
On the back - Go down to up

I shave once every 4 to 5 days. Cannot go over 5 days as it gets hard to shave - Too much hair.
