Head shaving with the straight

So tonight I was finishing up my shave, getting ready to turn my attention to my head. There it was, familiar as ever, the Mach 3. It's almost automatic, no real conscious thought or attention needed. Drone like in its efficiency of my curved bald dome.

My eyes shifted back to the straight. Why not?

Compared to the DE adventures on my skull it was a casual stroll. I only got a minor cut on the left posterior temporal side of my head and I attribute that to reaching across awkwardly with my right arm. Did one almost perfect pass and cleaned up with the M3.

Any other straight head shavers have some technique tips to share?

I've done it. It helps you you have a more mellow finish like coticule or really smooth Jnat. And make sure you flatten any wrinkles and keep the scalp stretched. And obviously be careful around the ears.

It's a little trickier than a safety, but it will definitely do better if you've got several days growth than a cart will.

I've used straights on occasion (shave my head everyday) and it works better then a DE (slant 37C works best among them). But I prefer my Feather DX for head shaves, the smaller blade (more like a kamisori) makes it a lot easier to maneuver around and it's sharper then anything else I've tried, only one pass and done.

It is what I use for the top of my head all of the time. I am bald and only have VERY fine hairs there so I don't get any feedback with the DE and usually miss a lot if I don't use the straight. I can do a WTG pass of the rest but still can't get the right angles for an ATG pass (I had wrist surgery a few months back and still have limited range of motion) so I use the DE for the ATG pass.

I do wtg with Feather AC/clones often. I use an M3 or DE most of the time, though. I can do atg with the DE that makes my head BBS all the time. Last year I had a fairly significant cut (no scar... just blood) when I didn't stretch out a wrinkle and sliced it with the Feather.

Most of the time, it is fairly straight forward. Using a Feather that has had a few shaves on it is the ideal. Nice and comfortable.

Another head shaver mentioned that he got a 'suction' on the top of his head that was hard to get around at times. Required a very low angle of attack. I've gotten that before - requires a lot of lather. DE and M3 don't have that problem.

Good Lord! This talk makes my butt pucker! I don't think I will be ready to try a straight on my noggin for quite a while. Sweeney Todd comes to mind...

Good for you guys though, I want to get there some day but I still have to receive my first straight though I did get a half blade disposable today that I want to try tonight. Any hints, tips?

I said the same thing about DE's, then straights, then shaving my head with a straight.

Here's a tip. Go slow and only do your cheeks/sideburns. Keep the spine close to your face, one pass only, have fun.

Thanks Dirk, I will take a shot tonight. -GULP!-

You will die... and then be reborn...

Broken blade straights are not easy - str8s are easier. Just require more maintenance. Try a SextoBlade if you want a nice compromise. Not as sharp, give great shaves.
